Except the Lewis loss occurred in 1938 when Elmer Ray had no management and was a green erratic fighter at 11-9.

Do we judge a man in his prime or not?

Thompson was a monster hitter, no shame in getting knocked out early by Turkey. Mauriello didn’t have the balls to fight Turkey. Losing by knockout to Turkey is certainly not as embarrassing as getting stopped by tomato can Johnny Skhor then getting knocked out by light heavyweight Lesnevich!

Ray beating Walcott and Charles in theif primes and going 74-3 under new management placed him on a very high pedestal of best heavyweights never to win a title. And he never got his shot at the title because Joe Louis’ management did not relish getting into the ring with Ray in 1946-1947

    Spot on.

Mauriello had no obligation to fight anybody.

He wasn't the champion, so he was denying them nothing.
