I had the pleasure of meeting Emmanuel & having a long chat with him a few years ago. He just didn't take himself seriously enough , he didnt know how good he really was, could easily be a champion. He was robbed so many times it was criminal. He laughed when I suggested he could have been a champion & said " Man I'm a fighter ,an entertainer I just try to give a good show to the fans. I know about the robberies but All I wanted was to entertain the fans. I'll fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, just give me time to get there" Emmanuel & another fighter with the same views was Buck Smith now those two really should be in the Boxing Hall of Fame in my book. They are what this great sport is all about
So sad the way he ended up getting shot & seriously hurt. He was just an innocent victim. He really should be in the HOF so should Buck Smith check out his record too
Nice post. I'll watch this later, I always like Augustus, he had talent and some good wins, but he was one of those fighters who would travel anywhere on short notice, and always gave value for money (even when he was clowning). I particularly liked his win over Jon Thaxton, which showed how good he could be. Thaxton gave Hatton a good fight too (started well, although Ricky dominated in the end) so he was no mug, but Augustus outclassed him. That verdict vs Courtney Burton was one of the worst robberies of all-time. A real fix-up.
[Q That verdict vs Courtney Burton was one of the worst robberies of all-time. A real fix-up.[/QUOTE] I had never seen Burton fight before the Augustus fight, but the fact that he even pretended that he won made me despise him with a fervor. Thoroughly enjoyed him getting obliterated by Ebo Elder. Even better that Drunken Master won the rematch, but that first fight was one of the most blatant fixes I've ever seen in judging.
