if you could induct someone for being one of the most robbed fighters in history he would be a first ballot edit: i ****ing love teddy atlas for telling it like it is and calling out the "officials" on there bull****
No!. There have been numerous talented journeymen over the years that could've achieved more with proper management/dedication/fair judges on their side. Augustus was a fun fighter to watch but he doesn't even scratch the surface of what qualifies for a HOF induction. If you want Augustus in, how about journeymen that actually turned their careers around and become champions like Saoul Mamby, Freddie Pendleton or Kelvin Seabrooks?.
Doesnt the IBHOF recognize what fighters do outside the ring as well?????:huh This guy has been sparring partner to dozens of world champions while pushing those same guys in many of his fights, losing by robbery to more than a few of em.:rofl NTM, what he's done for the youth in his hometown. Some ppl get to IBHOF based on ring merit alone, while theyre scum olutside the apron. Some get in having never thrown a single punch. Some are in b/c they fought the who's who of several eras, and ALWAYS made the fight. I think if I were a writer, I could squeeze him in based on what he's done in and outside the circle.:think
Yes! Absolutely ! Just for what he endured. If he had half the infrastructure in his career as somebody like half the people he fought or a real promoter he might not have 5 losses... Certainly a H.O.F.'er......
Obviously, he is not even close to HOF material. In an age with too many titles to count, he never came close to winning one. And I don't see a plausible argument for him winning a title in any era (even today). Certainly he was a decent, very awkward fighter. And, by all accounts a good guy. May he rest in peace. But, his accomplishments in the ring simply do not merit this type of inquiry.
In my opinion for what its worth I think Emmanuel Augustus should definitely be inducted int6o the HOF. That man is what this sport is all about. He fought anyone, anywhere , anytime. sometimes at just hours notice. His reply was " Sure just give me time to get there" Yes his record isn't great BUT 85% of his so called losses were home town decisions & officials bias Yes the Burton fight was a horrendous decision but there were many many more that weren't on TV. Kudos to Teddy Atlas for doing what he did & exposing the corruption. If Augustus had a manager and support team backing him up he could easily have been a champion Yes he should be inducted
Thankfully no he survived and is progressing well from all reports Ive seen Typical Augustus he knows how to fight
You could apply most of this to hundreds of boxers over the years, not to mention one's that didn't take blatant dives like Augustus, and some (that I mentioned earlier) that managed to put it all together and win world titles.
I remember watching that fight and thinking the exact same thing Teddy said out loud. It was a complete robbery. I'm not a huge Atlas fan but I sure respected him that night.
