Not only has the busiest beaver in boxing not fought in 2009, he doesn't even seem to have anything scheduled more than halfway into the year. Did he go quietly into that goodnight? Grotesquely fitting that his swan song would be another questionable loss to a prospect (Figueroa, whose shooting star was then promptly nuked by the the KO King in perhaps a rare moment of temperance from the forces of Pugilistic Cosmic Justice). The name Emanuel Augustus may not likely be Canastota-bound (nor his birth name Emanuel Burton) - even though he was maybe a better fighter than probable lock Arturo Gatti (tragic they never met h2h/pXp to settle it) - but his was a career that should be remembered and appreciated for the fun, strange ride it was. In boxing, the term sensational is thrown around way too often. This guy is sensational. The drunken boxing king.
When you're old, senile, and telling your grandkids about Roy Jones, don't forget to mention this guy. One of the game's true originals.
the dude was the worst managed fighter in the history of the game nobody has been robbed more than him he gave Floyd fits
I've got Teddy's voice in my head during the last round of Augustus - Ward... "No one has to TELL these guys to fight."
I heard he has a pretty sweet deal fighting in... Australia I think it is? Had a few fights there in quick succession, neutral ground where he could get a fair shake. I can't imagine he opted out of that so fast?
Awesome fighter, and I agree, mismanaged. Wrong side of a lot of decisions, of course. Guy fights like that and the judges hate him. Remember when he fought...Burton, was it? He did this perfectly legit spin from the ropes and the ref gave him dirty looks. The ref rode his ass bad in that fight.
Absolutely!!!!!!I love watching this guy fight. Maybe Floyd'll fight him a FEW more times..He did say Augustus was his toughest fight and he has a lot of losses:think
Yeah, he fought three cans in New South Wales in a five month span during the spring/summer of 2008. Was a fairly sweet deal, I guess, back when it meant regular work... It's been eight months since his last in-ring appearance, however, and like I said, he's not even slated. I'm going to go ahead and pronounce the man retired. Thanks, champ. :happy Hmm...:think "Augustus is the subject of a documentary film entitled "The Journeyman" currently being filmed in Brownsville, Texas. Documentary filmmaker Sean Lynn will follow Augustus until he gets a shot at a world title or retires. Filming began in March of 2006." Looking forward to that. :good Should be in post-production and then a theater near us soon, I'd gather. :yep
Last I heard EA was back in Australia and training, although this hasn't been verified in a couple of months. It's very possible he's being supported by the same promoter down there and training/sparring for a fight later this year. Even if he doesn't fight again, what an entertaining career. It's really too bad he never got a big day and won a title--that was his dream. So close to it so many times. The win over Ward would have been big, had the shot against PBF, ranked after beating Vilches, just never had the management to get the big money.
