Yeah, I'm not sure what the people who claim he's overrated would prefer to have said about him. "He deserved every loss and wasn't entertaining or full of heart?" It would seem to spare him the O-R tag, one would have to speak the opposite of the truth. :think
well i say he is overrated because many here believe that a focused and motivated EA would put him up there at the same level as the elites. When you look at it, even if he were serious about his career he didnt have any real physical attributes to qualify him as champion threat. Many are just blinded by his fashionable awkardness to confuse any opponent out there but misinterpret it as great talent.
I think what many people have said is that a focused, motivated, and fairly treated Ya'kov probably gets a world title at some point in his career. Carlos Baldomir had a world title. So did Sultan Ibragimov. Saying someone "coulda been (not only a contenda, but) a champ" is a far cry from pegging them as an elite/ATG. It's hard not to misinterpret successfully hitting without getting hit (flush) at a great rate as talent. The guy didn't roll under punches like a James Toney, but he certainly knew how to negate their efficacy by turning his head while doing his showboating and gyrating, and had his wits about him enough to do so. He also knew how to throw and land textbook punches, but they're just all mixed in with a plethora of improbable wild "WTF" angles that he decided to go for just for the hell of it.
I remember reading somewhere, that during the Olivera fight, where Olivera started complaining of head problems, Augustus focused punches to the body because he didn't want to hurt Olivera because the ref or his corner wouldn't stop the fight. Class fighter!
hes like buck smith, except with ALOT more talent.... http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=6117&cat=boxer buck smith fought like 35 times in 1993 alone
yeah... I liked Augustus before that, thought he was a laff riot in the ring, always clowning and entertaining but also putting up a serious fight. After the Oliviera fight I loved the guy. He could have whaled away on Ray and got a highlight reel KO, the ref was too oblivious to see what was going on with Ray but Augustus wasn't, and he refused to go to the head or even seriously hit the guy. He was a real human being, even in the heat of battle. imho better than Gatti, mostly due to the PBF fight. At worst you could say he was the same level, which isn't bad at all. I always hoped he would get that one BIG money fight to send him off the right way.
I agree, better than Gatti. Indisputably, therefore, better than Ward. I can see Boom Boom's point about being on the same level in "status", as I think that's what he meant, but in overall ability EA is head and shoulders above thunder & lightning. And that's not just an illusion projected by his awkward style - the proof is in the pudding of his accurate combination punching and the fact that he very rarely took the full steam of a power punch despite receiving plenty of glancing connects.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RkFAcirNbM Another one of those "if only they still went 15" moments. The counter right with :50 left is really what starts it. Punch doesn't travel more than a foot.
