Emanuel basically talked about amateur boxing from the last 50 years or so in this interview. He spoke about a lot of fighters from when they were amateurs, including Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones, Sweet Pea, Mark Breland, George Foreman, Howard Davis, Ronnie Shields, Teofilo Stevenson, and more!

Thought some of you might enjoy reading this. Cheers.

And in case anyone was wondering, that photo is actually of Emanuel winning his match in the semi-finals of the 1963 National Golden Gloves Tournament - which he would go on to win.

That photo was taken March 6, 1973 in Chicago.

    very good read.

i liked the bit about his prefereed boxers. Also the part about floyd mayweather digging deep was interesting.
And how good leonard was and how good he could have been with stronger hands.

Interesting read. Emmanuel appears to know his stuff, yet he constantly contradicts this with his commentary on fights.

It did took him quite some time to realize how good Whitaker was.

Emanuel must have been really impressed by Floyd's win over Auggie Sanchez, because this is a subject he has brought up to me during interviews at least 2 or 3 times previously.

I personally love these old stories from some of these great fighters when they were amateurs. I don't know a whole lot about what a lot of these guys did as amateurs, so in addition to finding it educational I just find it fascinating.

The part I found most interesting myself was when he talked about Sweet Pea going in the gym and outclassing a red-hot Camacho, frustrating him to the point where a fight broke out and Camacho tried to choke Sweet Pea inside the ring.

I wish I could have witnessed that particular sparring session. Truly sounds like one of those magical gym time moments.

    :good

I think Emanuel is often on the receiving end of some harsh criticism regarding his commentary. I actually think he does quite a good job! He may not bring the enthusiasm the way, say, Big George did, but he usually provides some interesting observations.

Well in fairness, I think it's got to be tough to gauge these guys sometimes. I mean look at Andre Ward? He's been a great technician for some time, but few people (besides myself :D ) were favoring him to beat Kessler and win the Super Six. But throughout the course of the Super Six, people finally began to realize and appreciate the type of talent we were dealing with.

Prior to that, even including his win over Miranda, who had been bested several times in his career at that point, he never truly shined as the star he's perhaps turning into even now still.

So the fact that he had to watch Sweet Pea outclass a guy like Camacho - who was a hot pro prospect when Pea hadn't even won his Olympic Gold yet, I think it makes sense! I mean surely that type of sparring performance would act as an eye-opener to many!

Anyway guys, thanks again for reading! Appreciate it!

    :cheers

I can see why Augie was so hyped, such a shame he was shut down by Hamed.
