    Emanuel Steward clearly has more boxing knowledge than Penn, and as we all know, theoretical knowledge trumps victories in the ring.

    True he does but hes not a fighter and hes also an old man not just by boxing standards. He actually is an OLD MAN. Steward was a good stand out amatuer but i believe that was arond 50 years ago.

    Wait a minute, though. What if Steward wrote an insightful book about boxing with lots of clever aphorisms like "styles make fights" and pictures of himself performing the techniques? Wouldn't that mean that he could beat Penn?

    No, you know Clubber Lang would ko both in 3 seconds flat. I pity you fools.... Or maybe Rock Balboa would be the GOAT in MMA. I mean he had the hands, chin, heart and he beat the greatest wrestler the world will ever know in Thunderlips so we know his ground game is top notch

    CT you are always a very insightful and intelligent poster so please tell me exactly what point you are trying to prove with this seemingly ridiculous post.

    BJ Penn beats Manny Steward in a boxing match. Sure, technically Manny may have more skills and tools than BJ Penn but that can only take you so far (just as athleticism can only take you so far.) BJ's superior athleticism easily wins the fight for him, probably by brutal KO.

    BJ is far too quick and powerful for an any old man like Manny Steward to beat him probably in any sport really, but especially in a combat sport. Skill is very important sure, but it isn't enough at that age and at that level of decline. The athleticism necessary to execute the skills you know at a high level is very important.

    Quite so.

    This thread originated when I looked at the "Bruce Lee vs. Thai Boxer" thread and saw that several people picked Bruce over BJ Penn in an MMA match. Mind you, I didn't intend this thread as an attack on Lee*, but rather as a tongue-in-cheek objection to the type of evidence that many of Lee's supporters brought to the table.

    They quoted his theories from the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, posted pictures of Bruce demonstrating Jun Fan techniques, and basically proved that Bruce was a great analyst of martial arts. I agree. Unfortunately (as this thread suggests), theoretical knowledge alone doesn't cut it. Only competition against skilled opponents can do that. I don't rate Fedor as the best fighter in the world because of the brilliance of his book, but because he beat a lot of great fighters.

    In all fairness, a few of Lee's supporters posted his fight record as well, and I approve. My thread was not directed at them, but at a particular type of faulty reasoning. (I'm often guilty of the same thing myself when I look at 19th century boxing manuals like Mike Donovan's).

    Poor anaology. If Bruce Lee had a lot of knowledge and training experience in grappling/mma but lacked experience in real fighting, it would be somewhat better. As it is, I thought you were alluding to Jack Dempsey or something (or were just a troll).
