He'll try and turn Khan into a puncher and it wont work out for him... The only way Khan can be successful is to hit and run, hit and run... He aint got the rawness to stand there and fight with the top dogs... He'll get ktfo 9 times out of 10 (If you listen to his commentary in the Garcia fight he was impressed by Khan)
Manny trained Hearns right from the amateurs. He cannot do anything for Khan who is fundamentally flawed and has a weak boxing brain.
I know what Lewis did but Manny trusted Lewis more with other shots, with Wlad....he taught him how to hold, to make sure he was never out of balance, and that to throw the right hand down the middle through the guard, ive seen Manny countess times talking boxing i know what he is about fella. What manny gets annoyed with is that once the fighter is there to be hit, that Wlad dosent pop the right hand out, he is still to tentative. Trust me Stweard dosent want Wlad throwing uppercuts, or bending his knees too much, he likes them to stand tall. Wlad threw hooks pre-steward far more often.
What manny will do- Footwork but more than anything tell Amir do not ever be off balance, so we will see less of Amir reaching with his punches. Amir also bends slightly forward, like he is a small fighter but he is tall for his weight class, again Manny will tell him to stand tall. Manny will teach him all his little secrets to hold on, but to put his weight on the other guy and wear them down. He will teach Amir to throw the right hand properly and tight. Amir will do less weights, less conditioning with Ariza, more ring work... You will see Amir stop punching to the body, less uppercuts, less left hooks.....just see that fast one two down the middle. Less all outs brawls, no more 5 punch combos.
You are talking nonsense. Hearns was at Kronk as an amateur. This is why you shouldn't try to correct people when you're clueless.
Apart from the technique and balance things that have been mentioned previously, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that Khan, under Steward will develop a much better change of tempo in his punching. A lot of the time he'll just throw as many fast shots as he can, but Manny is huge on changes of tempo, see it with Wlad all the time too.
Yep this is spot on. Manny really focuses on balance and footwork. He's not into this sports science and S&C coaching. He'll focus on boxing which is what Khan needs instead of us looking at shape of his body we should be seeing pad sessions and sparring clips and seeing differences there. I remember Manny said he had Wlad for hours in first session repeating the same thing over and over. Even though it would be boring i'd love to see what type of stuff he'd do with Khan on Week 1. Basics! As Bernard Hopkins once said 'it's like a guy with all these degree's, always flashing his havard and yale degree's. But he don't cross the street and look left and right and gets his by a tractor trailer. But i will look left and right when i cross because that's the basics, that's what i was taught. I never lost it, i never forgot it!''. See for me Khan had spent far to long talking about his size, his speed and strength and conditioning when in reality his skills were the vital part of his game he needed to develop. Manny had a philosophy and that's what makes him a great coach, see if your a coach and have no philosophy then how do you structure your work?. How do you make your pupil buy into what your teaching?. As a coach you must have a clear vision, a understanding of what's needed and a method to your work. Manny has that and that's why he's one of the great trainers.
Stewards claims he has NOT spoken with Khan and doesn't know what the **** Amir is talking about. What gives?:huh
I thought Freddie Roach was supposed to be "the best trainer in the world". And the Cuban guy before that was supposed to be pretty ****ing excellent trainer too. Come on, Steward aint going to do much with Khan. Yes, Khan can come back and win a few fights and even a title. And people might say "it's the new trainer" ... but really, he's unlikely to improve very dramatically if at all.
Spot on about size thing, I remember Hatton talking about how much bigger he was than Pacqaio...thats the wrong way to think when approaching fights as its not the size but the skill at fighting that counts. One of the reasons I hate the 17 weight classes, there is too many, creates to many ways for top fighters to avoid each other. Marquez, Khan, Mayweather account for 3 weight classes when in reality they are the same size type men, give 5 pounds or so. Hopefully Amir stops the waving his hands in the air when he is hurt, he learnt that of Pacquaio. Anyway.....basics......Khan if he listens will be a very effective fighter, and win more titles, dont think he will be uber dominant but he will be succesful under Steward. I personally thik Khan would do well to go with Booth.
Bit of an idiotic statement to suggst Emmanuel Steward (trainer of god knows hiw many world champions) could not "train someone from grass roots". If he's not qualified to do it, then i don't know who is.
Dennis Andries Wilfred Benítez Julio César Chávez Kermit Cintron Miguel Cotto Oscar De La Hoya Domonique Dolton Naseem Hamed Thomas Hearns Evander Holyfield John David Jackson Hilmer Kenty Ole Klemetsen Wladimir Klitschko Lennox Lewis Michael Moorer Oliver McCall Mike McCallum Milton McCrory Steve McCrory Gerald McClellan Miguel Angel Gonzalez Jimmy Paul Jermain Taylor Duane Thomas James Toney Yuriorkis Gamboa -List of world champions trained by Steward.
