    Check his record out:

What had he actually done so noteworthy to fight for the World Middleweight Championship.

Fighting Pirog was a complete mismatch in the first place. He is now ranked 36th in the world. Martin Murray is way ahead of him!

What had Pirog done? Did you also have a problem with him fighting for the title?

Neither fighter had done anything noteworthy as professionals. However, they did not fight for the "middleweight championship." They fought for a vacant title. The championship lineage goes Hopkins, Taylor, Pavlik, Martinez. If a fighter is not part of the lineage, he is not the champ, and never was.

The situation we have at 160 is bit odd. We have 4 accomplished and well established fighters, and under them we have a division in development. Pirog/Jacobs was just a prospect verses prospect fight. The fact that a "world title" was at stake is no more of a sham than the 2005 Abraham/Ikeke fight.

it wasnt a mismatch until Jacobs got KTFO
It was quite clear from the beginning that the winner of that fight will get some hype while the loser is going to return on the buttend.
There should be more such prospect vs prospect type fights these days though.

Pirog had a good win over Toygonbayev and fought solid guys Ajetovic, Tatevosyan, Jantuah, Mitchell while Jacobs basically only fought Ishe Smith
I think the experience was a big key factor in that fight. Pirog looked well rounded and Jacobs quite green. Though i was thinking Jacobs had more power and not that a weak chin.

This happens time and time again specially with young un-tested/unproven prospects..

Agreed, it's weird. So much talent without straps or rec. There has to be a culling of some sort. A tournament, or people moving to 68 or 54. Either way this is arguably the most talented MW division we have seen since the 40's.

Neither guy did much to earn the title shot, but the WBO ranked them #1 and #2. What were they supposed to do, turn down a title shot the WBO gave to them? It's not like there are all these other great fighters in that division anyway. Middleweight is weak as hell. Lots of up and coming talent, but none of them are quite there yet.

If you're going to include European gatekeepers, you need to include the American ones Jacobs fought, like Walton, Walker and Watson. Pirog's resume coming into the fight wasn't that much better than Jacobs'. Both had obvious talent.

Sure jacobs was a bit green for the fight but wasn't Pirog as well? That's why it was considered such a good fight beforehand because really no one could be too sure about who would win. I thought the first 4 round were quite even as well so for me it's wrong to count jacobs out yet and also wrong to big pirog up to much. I'd expect the, both to be in title contention for years to come
