True, Floyd is quite strong. But there is a difference between handling a Mosley and holding your own against Dick Tiger.
Boxers change physically and people are assuming Griffith was as strong against Dick Tiger as he was against Rodriquez/Napoles. He wasn't as strong at 147. Floyd also wasn't as strong from 2006-7 as he is today
They are about the same size. Griffith was stronger while Mayweather has better skills. I will go with Mayweather in a close one.
Griffith weighed only 150 pounds against Tiger though. Was still able to match the man who tossed around the likes of Gene Fullmer, Hurricane Carter and Florentino Fernandez among others. Emile against a Margarito-type opponent: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpYH_fckszE[/ame]
Margarito gets underated on this board too. He's not skilled at all, but he does hold the actual record for punch output in a filmed title fight - think about that - and he showed against Cotto and Pacquiao that he can take his lumps. A dangerous man.
I was mainly comparing the strength and durability. :good Could never see Mayweather handling a Margarito like that.
When I think of Ortega I do think that he was like that eras Margarito..though he was certainly different. Not as big or with as much of the whirlwind volume punching style..but he was a more skilled and polished operator without a doubt.
I thought Jose's power and body punching kept Emile just as much under control as his speed and defensive ability. Griffith seemed clearly hurt by the early knockdown and clammed up on several occasions when Napoles let fly. When it was a tactical fencing match with the jabs I dont think Emile was completely out of his depth..from memory he landed plenty with his jab, just not with the same authority as Jose. Emile holds wins over Dupas and Archer two very very good cuties..thr quick handed Benvenuti and GJ Harris. Over the course of his career he showed a foil for many styles..I think you had to have a truly committed offense to beat Griffith as clearly as LMR, Napoles and Monzon did..not just sit back and look to nick rounds off him. He worked pretty hard and if he had to get messy and sloppy with a minimalist strategy, he was prepared to do that. Probably because he had the benefit of the doubt so many times in NY but also because he was a damned good fighter.
Griffith is just on another level. I agree McGrain that Margarito is very dangerous. Bar a poor showing against Mosley (for numerous reasons) he has always demonstrated unbelievable punch resistance and will. As long as he's there, he's there. Not a good man to have in front of you unless you're a serious fighter. It's clear to see from the Pac fight that he's got a fair dig even without the special wraps. He's pretty much done now IMO, but stick him in with Berto and he'd f'n muller him. Same goes for Canelo.
He could be so cagey he was painful to watch, but he did what he needed to do. Against Napoles he obviously struggled with the weight, but he was also in with a genius. The early kd upset him IMO, he was visibly shaken upon getting up and I think any chance he had of getting into a higher gear was gone with that.
