Did someone actually say Monzon ground Griffith down in a similar fashion to what you would expect GGG to do??? Monzon didnt ground Griffith down. Go watch those fights. He stood outside counterpunching him to death with utilizing his height and reach. He fought nothing like Golovkin fights. Yet another example of someone painting Monzon as something he wasnt: a seek and destroy puncher. And frankly if you want to get technical, even utilizing his height, reach, and awkward defense against an older and much more shop worn Griffith their second fight could have gone either way. Put the Griffith who was still somewhat close to his prime, albeit fighting above his best weight, and make GGG come in at 160 the day of the fight (as they did back in Griffith's day) and Griffith's class would tell. It may not be GGG's fault that his resume is paper thin in terms of quality but the only guy he ever faced who was even a pimple on Griffith's ass was Canelo and GGG couldnt beat him. He damn sure isnt beating Griffith.
Yep,,seems that when GGG is matched in fantasy fights it's the 36 year old that's mentioned as an example.
Thats because he never fought anyone until he was 36. Thats why hes really not worth mentioning in fantasy fights. He never proved himself worthy of the discussion in his physical prime and if you bring up the only two fights he had at the elite level his fans just say “well he was past his prime.” Can we just admit that the bar for supposed greatness in this era is a LOT lower than it was in Griffiths when a guy can have umpteen title defenses without ever having faced a real threat? We might as well be questioning how Lamar Clark would do in fantasy fights. Oh wait, Clark actually stepped up when he was 26...
Agree with you in Monzon. GGG lost to Canelo the same way Greb never won officially over Tunney. For a guy who understands boxing you should know a skilled pressure fighter with power almost always eats up the smaller boxer with none. GGG has a great jab too. How many times did Griffith lose again? Sure all those guys who beat Griffith could stand with GGG! Not.
How many fights did Hagler or Monzon win past the age of 34? 0. They quickly retired and their fans cry they were past their prime much sooner than age 36. Famous welters used to move up to face middleweight champions. Mayweather, PAC, and Cotto knew better to try that vs GGG.
