I know that Pernell was better suited 12 lbs. south, but this is an intriguing match-up to me...and I think it's a fair fight..IMO Whitaker is arguebly the best at lightweight limit, he possesses a natural talent and defensive skill set that is so difficult to solve within a prize ring...For anyone....With Griffith, he would face a man who is only one inch taller than himself...but is a very experienced, adaptable and tremendously strong welterweight who regularly fought at the middleweight limit...(Griffith is also a good defensive fighter as well...)
Would Emile be able to use his strength against the fast, evasive Whitaker? Pernell seems to have such an edge against the fighters he fought, with his speed and defense...It is as if he takes the strength of an opponent out of the equation...Could he do that against Emile Griffith?...Thereby frustrating and perhaps outpointing the larger man?
Can Emile catch up to Whitaker?...forcing an inside fight...
15 rounds at welterweight. Who and why?
