Interesting fight. Pernell was a genius in the ring. But, I think that the bigger, stronger (and very skilled, as well) Griffith outworks and out-muscles the smaller Whitaker for a UD.
Pernell Sweet Pea Whittaker was a very slick quick fighter who was very hard to attack, he could make you miss. He also had a very good southpaw right jab. Emile Griffith was also very quick and could hit. This fight starts out as a very tactical match, one sizing up the other. I see Emile's effective aggressiveness being the factor in this bout, Griffith by decision.
Like he was the first and only fighter to dope out the riddle that was Gypsy Joe Harris, Griffith figures out and decisions The Pea in a tactical, though dreadfully boring (for the usual suspects) but a higher level of boxing brains could scarcely be found in any other fight. Incidently, I am delighted that Emile Griffith seems to be getting plenty of overdue recognition and respect from some posters here.
Agree with so many of the points made. Griffith decision for me. Tho not a big puncher he throws every punch in the book and plenty in combination. He's quick, skillful and has great timing and variety. Even so i think it would be a pretty close bout with the main difference being Griffith being the natural welter.
Ive always thought Whittaker was an overrated spoiler. That would bite him in the ass against a workman like Griffith. Griffith was unflappable and there wasnt anything he hadnt seen. I think he would just go about his business, ignore sweet peas tricks and just take a very boring decision. This would be a pretty awful matchup IMO.
