I think this is a fight that’s a little closer than Robinson vs Leonard with more variables then IMO Robinson just out “Sugar Ray-ing” Leonard haha. If this can get some traction I think it’d be an interesting bout to discuss.

Off the top of my head, I would veer towards Leonard. However, I think Emile was so good a ring general that he could easily hang back, once he got used to SRL speed, and time him with counters that would force Ray to fight more cautiously. I can absolutely see Griffith stifling Leonard in the second half of the bout by going in with a crouch, working the body and clinch, then removing and resetting himself alongside staying safe with his jab. I'd have to think on it a bit more though - it's been ages since I've watched either man. Curious what other have to say about this one.

I am of the opinion that Griffith may be the most underappreciated great fighter of the last 75 years. He was a multiple time, multiple weight class world champion. He has a lot of quality scalps on his resume and was as tough as they come. However, I just don't think he has that one special trait that would allow him to topple Sugar Ray. I have Leonard by a comfortable but very hard fought decision, 10 rounds to 5.

Mr Griffith was the best fighter of the 60s IMO and that’s no small feat… I think he was one of the best there ever was to visit either 147lbs and 160lbs.

I am taking SRL on points but he would have to work his arse off.

It’s an even battle on ability but reputation & familiarity will ensure a landslide winner in the thread, as with Durán vs most of the great old Light & Welters.

This would be an excellent fight. I tip Leonard by decision - his speed makes all the difference.

I just wanted the chance to say Griffith would absolutely beat Crawford, Mayweather and Pac in a calendar year, I could see him beating Hagler, Duran, Curry, Hearns… Leonard is 50-50 he was incredible.

I'm far from an expert on either but I'll take Leonard at 147 and Emile at 160. Both Decisions

I agree that Emile Griffith is underappreciated. But why is that so? I think it's because after the fatal Paret fight Emile was never the same fighter. He lacked the excitement and flair, and yes the killer instinct. He had all the technical skills -- and he was strong and a good infighter -- but many of his matches were best appreciated by aficionados, not the general public. He didn't rack up many knockouts.

It’s not especially challenging to do so IMO. I meant it when I said it’s an even fight on their best nights. Griffith, a first-rate technician & intuitive defensive fighter, will not be befuddled by Leonard’s greater speed IMO, nor will he be suckered into pursuing him. Though not as versatile as Leonard, I regard his ring generalship superior. As always, a good jab plays an important role with a speedy opponent, & Griffith had a fantastic one. Multi-purpose & able to operate at long & mid-range with equal effect. Durán was able to unsettle Leonard with a great inside game, & Griffith had one, to put it mildly.

This has razor-wire fight written all over it for mine. Of course, a very big factor in Leonard’s corner is he’s just as good as Griffith but with a more pleasing, crowd-friendly style. That as much as anything might decide it.
