How do you all think he would have done with conventional boxing training? I know, this pretty much makes it now him anymore, but I'd like to know what people think heh.
he had world level talent............but he wasnt that special. he would have had a better record but nobody would remember him. remember reggie green?? the guy was very talented...............but WHO remembers him??? havent seen any posts about him recently...........
Well, Augustus had pretty good natural ability, and god knows how relaxed in the ring he could be.. He could have been a very good champion with a little bit of normal boxing....
I actually think his unconventional style and old school skills is what made him as good as he was. He was talented, but he's not the most extremely physically gifted fighter out there. His biggest detriment weren't his odd tactics in the ring, it was his lack of commitment to the sport. Had he really applied himself to his craft and not had so many off nights, the guy might have been a champion.
now that you mentioned Reggie Greens name him and Augutus both boxed against Mickey Ward to ESPN classics they were both great fights
That relaxation in the ring is what could have made him great. Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, Ray Leonard... these guys all have that calmness in the ring which lets them see everything going on.
Emanuel's style was fine, he did often box in a conventional style, but the thing that hurt him in his career was that he too often was far too defensive. He would go into defensive spells and not counterpunch back, thus giving up rounds and losing fights against fighters he should have beaten.
his style made him who he was. he was a powderpuff. a decent left hook but he just had to catch you when you didnt expect it. Thats why he did these antics, so that you fall on to shots. he was also very sporadic. he usually kept a very high workrate and neat combo's to get his wins. he could also box a bit mor than people suggest. he did a jab and move style against stoner jones pretty effectivly. but it's these lapses of concentration that hurt his career. he coudl dominate a fight for 6 rounds then throw about 20 punches a round for the rest of it..then the fight goes to the other guy. against that russion dude he just seeme more contempt to be in his company than to actually pull of an upset...it's not his heart im criticising it's his mentality. he just goes into his shell and doesnt even counter or try to win the other rounds his skills even though rudimentary are very effective. i think having different skills would of made him a decent fighter but more of a saoul mamby type guy
I think it was several unanswered shots to the head that caused the ref to stop that fight in favor of Ward. It's been a while since I saw it though, so maybe it was a body shot that set the stage. Heck of a fight.
