Emmanuel Steward: "Haye has the speed of Sugar Ray Leonard and the power of Tyson".

In a recent interview with The Ring, Emmanuel Steward made the above observation in reference to David Haye ahead of the Londoner's fight with Wladimir Klitschko on 2 July.

Such a lofty proclamation is perhaps a step too far but I believe it is a sound indication of Steward's view of the dangers Haye represents and rest assured he will be looking at Haye as the most lethal challenger that Wladimir has ever faced. Indeed, Steward has, in previous interviews with ESB, speculated that Haye is more than capable of knocking Wladimir out and that Wlad will need to be at his very sharpest to negate the threat Haye poses.

This is in sharp contrast to the opinion of many posters who feel Klitschko will walk through Haye in much the same manner as he has previous opponents.

Of course, being capable of doing something and actually doing it are completely different animals, but in light of Steward's views, and Haye's attributes, if there is a fighter who is "all wrong" for Wlad it is without doubt Haye.

Jeff Powell (Daily Mail) very recently interviewed Wladimir at his training camp and reported he was surprisingly underwhelmed by the quality of Wlad's sparring, with a large emphasis on leaning and using his weight advantage. Whilst Wlad's size is a huge factor when comparing the two, if he relies solely on that he may well come up short, especially against a fighter as explosive as Haye.

I am aware that this contest has been talked to death, but I was wondering what poster's views are on Steward's comment and whether that changes any perspectives at all (probably not!).

I think that statement is a bit too much, Steward is just doing his part in promotion and hyping up Haye (as if Haye needed anymore hype).

But Haye is fast both with his hands and on his feet and his punches can take out Wlad if he lands. Haye's only chance is to catch Wlad, throw flurries, attack from the start. If he tries to employ the Valuev tactics (which is a very good possibility) than he will lose outright.

Haye needs to use his advantages, which is his speed, Wlad will use his technical ability and size.

Haye is obviously not faster than Leonard, and he may not punch as hard as tyson, but he punches hard enough to put you down which is enough.

Honestly he is either selling the fight, or he beleives it, if he beleives it then Wlad should come in like a ****ing beast, ready for war, if he is selling the fight, well who knows what we will get.

I like Hayes chances here, but he is going to have to take alot of big risk in there if he wants to win, he can not pot shot his way to a win, that is not going to happen, he is going to have to use angles, turn Klitschko and fire just before Wlad sets his feet.

if he can do that, he will thread that right hand through and things will get interesting.
I want Haye to win this fight, and I am supporting him in this fight, But likely Klitschko is going to win, likely Haye is getting knocked out... question is how quickly?

if Wlad rushes Haye and Haye finds a way to survive that early onslought, its going to be a fun fight to watch. if Wlad operates behind the jab and controls the center of the ring, Haye is going back to the UK looking to fight Danny Williams.

Haye has speeed and he has power. The difference is that he could have been a lot better than what he is. He has the talent. Just hasn't faught enough in his pro career.

  5. Steward overstating the risk to hype the fight. He knows better than anyone that Haye will be KTFO.

One thing I can point out, is that combonation Speed + Power has gotten Wlad knocked out twice, we know that, so in that sense Haye is dangerous.

The only chance I can see Haye having personally is stunning him with an overhand right whilst Wlad is jabbing, wobbling him and jumping in like he did against Audley.

He will need to do this early. If he tries to do a Valuev I think Wlad can keep him at bay all evening and either comfortably outbox him or (more likely as the fight progresses) knock him out. Trying to outbox Wlad will simply amplify the Ukranian's physical advantages and Haye may as well not bother turning up.

However, I wouldn't underestimate Haye's trainer Adam Booth. The man has continuously come up with a successful blue-print (for Haye and more recently Groves), and although he is up against Steward he may have a trick up his sleeve.

Haye's only advantages over Wlad are his speed, power and aggression. To make the most of these he will have to get the job done early, otherwise it will be a long and most likely painful night!
