Moving down in weight is what killed him, he should of had 2-3 fights at Heavyweight then retire. He only had chin problems when he dropped back down.
Yeah the hate on here is out of control. Some duche bag even said Tyson only fought tomato cans in his prime!?!?! Michael Spinks (who was demolished in 1 round), An older Larry Holmes, Trevor Burbrick. Frank Bruno, Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tucker, beat Andrew Golota's ass 9 years ago when Mike was past his prime! Mike was knocking everyone out brutally! He was a beast! A top 10 heavyweight all-time to be sure... once the dust clears. All in all, Roy will be remembered as the greatest fighter of the 90's and an ATG.
All those examples you've used the legends are getting there ass handed to them by fighters. Those are poor examples. A Prime Larry holmes was practically fighting a C level fighter in Ali at the time. Tyson was fighting Holmes who lost his two previous fights. Also every boxing fan knows boxers age differently. To use one of your shitty examples when Tyson was 38 he lost to Danny Williams followed by Brian McBride. atsch It's pretty obvious that when Roy Jones Jnr dropped down to light heavy after defeating Ruiz he lost what was special and was effectively on the fast downward spiral.
I'm just glad RJJ seems to have his mind intact, can speak normally, and is a happy person. He will always be the best fighter I've ever seen in my lifetime.
Agreed to a certain extend. I think Roy had detoriated as a fighter from around 2001 - 2002. He even admitted it himself before the Ruiz fight that he was not in he´s prime anymore. There is no doubt that Jones sees the Ruiz fight was he´s master piece and he lost some of the edge after that fight, but the physical decline was already started. Even though he was in my oppinoin a bit beyond he´s best it i am pleased that he took the 1st Tarver fight, because i see it as perhaps he´s greatest victory.
the middle and super middle jones in the mid 90's was awesome. :yep wasn't ever quite as convincing at light heavy for me. despite making something like 14 world title defences at the weight. lost his 1st fight at 35 yrs old(griffin DQ aside). top 30 all timer for me. :good
i agree with what your saying, i just believe the if he stayed at heavyweight he would of remained much more competitive and would of remained at a higher level for much longer. Basically it would of been beneficial to him in the long run. Adding on weight and suddenly losing it suddenly really messed up his body. I've only seen the first Tarver fight once, but if i remember he looked sluggish.
Roy Jones y ou're a champion. always was always will be. one of the best ever to throw the mitts. he lost it at the end, but at hist best this man was something very special. Great to see he learned how to lose with grace and humility. You gotta love Roy Jones Jr.
roy beat tarver the 1st time..close or not! Everyone gives Pacquiao credit for beating Marquez 2x (even though they were toss ups)...A win is a win..people weren't used to seeing Roy look mortal and so they swayed to Tarver, but RJ won the fight by winning the 11th and 12th rounds. tarver spent his entire boxing life preparing for Jones, while Roy didn't even remember his name. Evident in Tarver getting beat by Eric Harding and Glen Johnson the 1st times then B-Hop schooling him.
I can certainly follow the theory that the weight fluxtuation did something to the overall physique of Roy, what however bugs me a bit is that in Tarver 1 he took plenty of big shots, was slightly hurt at times but never in serious trouble. So i might think it is mix between weight, slower reflexes and then the mental fact that you have climbed the "fianal" mountain. When we speak of the fight itself it was the first time he had to go through hell in a fight and he came through. Tarver was in my oppinion much better on the night than his resume suggest. He has thought about a Jones fight for more or less 10 years. so in my oppinion this is an underrated win and i and i am happy that it happened because it adds to the legacy of Jones, when things could not have hapenned in another way. I agree that when looking back a prolonged stay at Hw would have been better. I love Holyfield as much as Jones so i would not have been to happy about that one, but i believe Jones would have won at the time. A unification with Byrd would have been ideal and then perhaps a shot for glory agiant Lennox & call it a day at 35-36. Next to 0 chance of sucess against Lennox but better than what happened last week.
