I think the Ruiz fight was a brilliant move by Jones. He got a HW strap againts possibly the least skilled HW titleholder of all times (maybe Carnera was worst, who knows), and then went back to LHW and was able to use the weight loss as an excuse for his poor performances against what was at that point a step up in competition for him. People forget the string of C and B level fighters and old guys Roy faced at LHW before he got in the ring with Tarver (who was an A- fighter--good, not great). With the help of HBO and their hype machine, he was able to avoid all of the perceived threats (while being paid handsomely), under the premise that he was SO good that the fights didn't really need to happen for him to get the credit. When he finally stepped up against a good, solid and somewhat deceptive southpaw with pop at LHW, it was all over for the myth of Jones. After that, it wasn't so easy for Jones to get hefty pay days from HBO fighting garbage men. All of a sudden the weight loss ruined him. Yeah right! Such a conveniently timely argument. He gets credit for the Toney fight and even the green Hopkins victory, but he is definitely not an ATG. When your most memorable win is a semi-entertaining decision win against John Ruiz (who was later decisioned by Toney, btw), you are not an ATG. And for the record, though not a Jones hater (I recognize he had talent), I've never been a fan of his. Always thought he a was a smoke and mirrors act (compared to the Leanoards and Robinsons and Durans), so you can take my opinion with all the grains of salt you feel you need to hang on to your delusions!
Great post newb.......I'd have to agree with just about everything you said. Jones is a great, but probably not an ATG to rank with the Ali's, Duran's, etc...... Imo Jones had the most physical talent I've ever seen in the 30 years I've been a fan.......but I will say that along with that, I'm of the belief he waisted his prime years fighting a little bit better than journeymen fighters. Fighters like McCallum and Juan Manuel Marquez were avoided there whole careers, so there resumes are a little below some of his peers.....these pair never had the clout and fanbase of Jones Jr. however, and so the other fighters avoiding him always had the excuse of who's he?????? With Jones is different however......you knew who Roy Jones was...... ......and I'm of the belief that if a fight did'nt get made, the fighter with the name and the clout is who to blame. If Leonard would have not fought Hearns, Duran, and Hagler.....it was on Leonard, he was the draw! ......the same with Mike Tyson....fights not getting made were on him, he was the draw. ......the same again with Mayweather and Pacquiao today. Pacquiao has done his part to get fights made......but his counterpart on March 2010 has not......Mayweather is the name and the draw, so its on him if specific matchups the fans want dont get made. Its up to the name fighter to do what necessary to have fights get made. Roy Jones certainly was a name fighter that gave no leeway at the bargaining table to have fights get made. Roy the greatest fighter of our time. Not all time,. but our time. Held onto boxing too long like many boxers do. But, gave some of the best performances ever witnessed in the ring. Here is to hoping he retires, picks up a nice commentating job and gives us insight into the ring like only he can do. I didn't forgot.
