End of Berto Hype.

What do you expect in the fallout years of Harry Simon and Sven Ottke. Their sheer dominance of the boxing world had fighters like Calzaghe and Floyd living off their coat-tails. Its too bad we hold fighters to the standards set out by freaks like Simon and Ottke.

Things will get back into line soon but as long as the dominance of Ottke and Simon still resonates in the boxing world.

 

As far as I can tell, every fighter is either a tomato can or hype job on ESB, no middle ground. Ortiz won, and deserved to. But that's it. Both guys fought with tons of heart.

 

Even before his fight with Ortiz, it's not hard to see Berto's flaws. That said, I don't regret asking for a fight between Pac and Berto. I never bought into the Berto hype; I just simply thought and still think he has a chance to be the best in his division. So he lost the fight. Not the end of the world. He at least went the distance with Ortiz. Besides, if Ortiz can come back after quitting against Maidana, who's to say Berto can't make a strong comeback as well?

The act of Pac fighting washed up/undetermined fighters is getting old. We need to see him against a young, hungry lion. I've said this even before Berto-Ortiz: the winner of this match should get a shot at Pac (or Floyd). We all know Pac/Floyd would be a heavy favorite against Ortiz. But hey, make the fight happen anyway....because which other 147 lb contender is more deserving other than Ortiz?

 

hhahah, technically you can't really argue against that. said it before and i'll keep saying it, fans today don't **** about. you lose, you're a loser. it's common sense.

 

I admit, I never really bought into the hype.

The guy has a shaky chin and relies exclusively on his athleticism. It was bound to happen on day.

Everybody should be happy that Berto lost his belt. The guy has been on HBO at least 11 times and guess how many credible opponents he has had? Two including tonight. The guy has been paid ridiculous amounts of money to fight sub par fighters on the network of champions and can't even sell tickets.

He is also a cry baby that holds every time somebody gets on the inside with him. We should all be happy that Ortiz derailed this poster boy's aspirations.

 

I was reading ESPN's detailed description of the fight and Berto said he would have rather won than been in an exciting fight. This fight and the Collazo fights were his most exciting fights and guess what? They were his most competitive fights.

 

hey man, that how these bitches are. everybody knew berto was a flawed fighter and needed to step up his compeition, now you got ***gots acting like people claimed berto was unbeatable. he fought a dangerous cat in ortiz and ortiz handled his business. instead of giving the credit where its due, they want **** on the guy for losing to another good fighter.

 

Holding excessively or not, Berto did his part to be in a damn good fight tonight. He needed to be tested like this more often because that's what helps fighters take their game to the next level. I also think things were getting too easy for him, and he probably came in overconfident after taking out Hernandez like he did. There's a good chance he was underestimating Ortiz based on Victor's last few outings, as well.

I can't blame him for taking the HBO deal- if I were in his shoes, I sure as hell wouldn't turn it down even if there were fighters more qualified than me. There's not enough dollars in the sport to be able to say no to HBO unless you've got the rare ability to sell out stadiums and get network backing from somewhere else, and Berto hasn't got that.

I've criticized Team Berto's matchmaking before because it seemed like they were setting him up against soft touches to be cashed out against Floyd or Manny at the expense of matching him tough for developmental reasons, but tonight's not the night for me to knock Andre. If he was facing a top 30 guy who had no hope, I'd raise the same concerns I did before. But he fought a pretty good, hungry fighter tonight and had to survive a fight where I thought there was no chance he'd make it all 12. Credit to him for being in an entertaining fight!

 

Berto probably has a rematch clause in that contract since Ortiz was a voluntary defence,
