A good boxer would have won against Ruiz, but Joshua was never a great talent or even Hall of Fame material. He was lucky enough to win the title against "Journeyman" opponent in Charles Martin and wouldn't have been able to win the title in the 80s or 90s for example.
Usyk and Fury are top tier fighters. I also rate both Klitschko's in that bracket. Rating fighters will always be subjective but the Klitschko's could never have their "Fury Usyk" moment unless they faced each other which was never going to happen.
Not at all a "golden age," but I agree it's over. If you want to see what a great era of HW boxing looks like, check out some videos of the 1970s, or even the 1990s. This was actually one of the more mediocre eras in heavyweight history!!
I think it's time for it to end now. Usyk has proven himself to be the best heavyweight of this generation.
The era ended the moment Saudi money started flowing, because the faux status quo established by a contest of promotional wars, padded records, and careful matchmaking shattered, revealing who's who. It was a painfully slow burn, and a quick money-fueled supernova, with new order emerging. A theatrical take, but you get my point. Plenty of great fights to be made still, and losing is not the end anymore, which is the healthiest thing that could have happened to the division.
No it wasn't, it was actually 1 of the most embarrassing eras in recent memory. -The division was virtually cleaned out by a blown-up CW, a clear regression from the previous era where blown-up CWs hit a wall @the top level. -The #2 fighter of the era was dropped & barely edged an MMA fighter making his pro debut, 1 of the biggest black eyes the HW division has ever received. -Wilder may be the crudest/sloppiest fighter to ever hold onto a title across multiple defenses. -Joshua gets embarrassingly upset every time he's on the cusp of a genuine megafight. People hype up this era b/c it had more excitement & drama than the Klitschko era, but it will go down as a disappointing era of overhyped fighters & unfulfilled potential. It's basically the Tyson era but w/o a Tyson. Agreed.
Only good thing this era did was bring boxing back from Germany. Boxing in Germany is and always will be a mess and somehow gross.
Wlad`s era was the worst in history, he constantly clinched, and the top 10 were very poor during his reign.
This is true. A decent era all things considered. If Usyk beats Fury again he'll have a phenomenal, albeit short, resume of Dubois (stoppage), AJ twice, and Fury twice, in addition to Chisora and his entire CW ledger. Pretty solid if you ask me Same can be said for WW obviously as Crawford emerged Supreme last year and all of Spence, Porter, Danny, and Thurman have hung it up. The sport is still enticing though with LW/JWW heating up, JFW containing arguably the world's BEST fighter, and there's a terrific mix of young and old at JMW and SMW.
I think it probably is the final chapter and if Usyk wins he obviously finishes king of the castle. Should Fury win, particularly if he wins in emphatic fashion, it becomes a matter of opinion.
