if you land the hook...most times you can safelty get space....because the way you turn with the hook...step back with your right foot and pivot out a bit after a left hook and your be fine.
a jab is a good finishing punch if your game is to get in do work and get the **** out.....that would work for most mayweather fighters....wouldnt be what a swarmer slugger or just general blood man would want to do.
Great way of explaining something I do repeatedly. If I'm staying put, I throw the hook. If I'm stepping out I throw the jab.
if your a clever boxer you would finish with the jab ,to keeping your self at range by doing this your working out what sort of boxer your up against finishing with the left hook would be the knock out shot, with your weight being over the front foot if you committed to the right hand ,,but then your on the inside of range you may get knocked out SO,, for me ,its the jab i like to pick my Punch's & Waite for the opening if you want to go to war on the inside then finish with the left hook be prepared to get hit if you don't contact your hook which reminds me of a boxing clip on youtube both boxers hit with a left hook & knock each other out ,,,quality
your back foot could be to much in line with your front foot ,,try widening your stance to the side & back alittle ( with the back foot),,,try to work on it ,or you mightn't become conch's of throwing a hook , good look
