    A paper written today can claim Dan Knox won a title in 1849. I don't think it matters if the Clipper didn't exist it only matters if the Clipper ever claimed Dan Knox was a colored champion in 1849.

    I've not yet found a source for the clipper. Variety doesn't seem to have a back catalogue online, but I've not yet tried terribly hard either. I'm going to look through the Clipper when I get ahold of it. Given they stopped covering sports all together in 1894 it's not that terrible much time to cover.

    More like early 1900s if I recall correctly.
