On this week's boxing hour, there was a feature during which the new Secretary for the BBBoC stated the need for British title fights to become more prominent. Following this, Buncey got stuck into the English title, basically questioning the need for it, and I must say I am inclined to agree. It seems that only Hennessy fighters go for it anyway, or those with padded records who know they aren't up to British level and want to keep their 0 or 1 intact. Your thoughts please.
in divisions were the is not a lot of depth (for example the flyweight) there prob wouldent need it ,but i think if there is a lot of depth in that divsion it dosent do any harm. there is also the celtic title whic is for scotland,n ireland and wales.we are smaller countries and i think its stupid for us to have our own natinal titles but i think the celtic title in tose cases are a decent shout . but it does get silly ;i saw a laddie fight on tv who was the 'central area champion' that is taking to extremes.
Martin Gethin won it against John Fewkes recently - don't think either are with Hennessy and thought both had unbeaten records at stake.
Yes he did, and both were unbeaten. But still, does the English title have any purpose? And Celtic title for that matter? I don't think it does, regardless of the strength of the division. You get in line, beat the leading contenders and work your way up. (Amir Khan take note )
Sometimes an English title bout is used as a British Title eliminator but apart from that, as you say, it doesn't have much use.
yeah, i imagine the english title helps push you up the rankings to get a british title shot. i do agree its not really necessary in all weight divisions.
Also I'd say on the promotional side, TV, and to get bigger crowds it always sounds better if theres a "title" fight. Also its definitely good for boxers (perhaps the ones who are never going to get to british level), gives them something to aim for, mind you i'm thinking the area titles are better for this, maybe just have those then the british ones? Saying that I doubt people who've held these titles think they're meaningless.
Those area titles have a very proud heritage, they don't get mentioned these days but a lot of good fighters were area champions years ago.
