There's been a significant uplift in the quality of fights this year, which, frankly, is the most important thing. How many FOTY candidates were there last year? Amongst most it was about four:

    Escalante vs Roman
    Soto vs Antillion
    Khan vs Maidana
    JMM vs Katsidis

Personally I had Daniel Estrada vs Angel Rivero easily, but I understand that not many would have seen that excellent brawl, so that can almost be taken out of the equation. That right there is slim pickings, and there would be some validity in people having grievances over 2010.

This year however, has been superb. Yeah, people will complain about certain ''big'' fights being a letdown(Haye-Klitschko), and Pacquiao not really taking on a fight that presents him with much difficulty, but when you actually look at the fights that have happened this year you'll see that there's about 20 fights that all would've either won FOTY for last year or at least would've been up for consideration in some capacity.

    Case in point:

    This content is protected
    vs Marquez I
    Wolak vs Rodriguez
    Kirkland vs Angulo
    Gonzalez vs Vargas
    Choi vs Asiku
    Rios vs Antillon
    Rios vs Acosta
    Silva vs Robles
    Kennedy vs Diaz
    Paris vs Coleman
    Walsh vs Appleby
    Maidana vs Morales
    Berto vs Ortiz
    Palacios vs Gutierrez
    Lee vs McEwan
    Arce vs Vazquez Jr
Sturm vs Macklin(maybe pushing it a bit)
    Yamanaka vs. Iwasa
    John vs Yordan
Froch vs Johnson(again maybe pushing it)
    Webb vs Arron
    Martinez vs Guerrero I
    Silvestre vs Escobar
    Fury vs Firtha
    Mitchell vs Murray
    Rungvisai vs Rojas
    Kameda vs De la Mora
    Salgado vs Mendez
Groves-DeGale(not that good a fight, but I'm putting it in because I enjoyed watching him lose:D)

And I'm certain that I've inadvertantly missed out on more than a couple of fights there, which would only further illustrate my point. What is so inherently wrong with the sport this year that glosses over all of those fights? I've seen plenty of people makes these whimpers throughout the year, on many places, not just the Brit forum?

I'd swear that people just want to complain, it seems to happen mostly after fights people had known would be awful in advance.:blood After saying how awful certain fights would be - Toney vs Lebedev for a very recent example - they then chastise boxing and anoint 2011 as ghastly.

I'm baffled by this, help me out.

Got no problem with boxing this year, it has been excellent, lots of quality fights, lots of upsets and less fighters dodging each other. Taker your list of good fights and add that we have seen some new stars emerge or at least create an interest in themselves and others push on up the rankings such as:

    Broner
    Perez
    Canelo
    Sillakh
    Groves
    Russle jnr
    Golovkin
    Pirog
    Trout
    Brook
    Rios
    Magdelano

And all the competitive fights that were made:

    Haye V Wlad
    Ortiz V Berto
    Ward V Froch
    Cotto V Mar 2
    Hall V McDonnell
    Murray v Mitchell
    Burns V Katsidis
    Fury V Chisora
    Donaire V Montiel

Disappointments - well there are always going to be some but lets look at them in more detail:

Pacquiao V Mayweather didn't happen - i think many have resided themselves to this not happening now and there must be a large percentage of fans that didn't expect this this year. in an ideal world of course it would be an easy fight to make but there is a minefield around it now and it may never come off.

Haye V Wlad - i can understand the generals being pissed of with this because of Hayes trash talking beforehand but I'm guessing most who had watched both fighters and knew about them weren't expecting anything else.

Lopez V Gamboa - this is what happens when you try to build a fight up for five years.

Mosley V Pacquaio - didn't expect anything other from this.

Officials - **** year for officials, they been cocking up left, right and centre. Luckily for them anyone who matters could not give two shits how bad they are.

Dawson V Hopkins - that **** happens sometimes and anyone buying Hopkins expecting an entertaining night of boxing should know better.

Next year their is potential for many more quality fights such as:

    Donaire V Nishioka
    Donaire V Rigondeux
    Salido V Lopez 2
    Ward/Froch V Bute
    Ward/Froch V Kessler 2
    Gonzalez V Salgado
    Pong V Marquez
    Gamboa V John
    Canelo V JCC Jnr

It's been a quality year. So many good fights. So many shock endings and upsets.

Most memorable year in ages I reckon.

Yeah 2011 has shat all over 2010 in terms of boxing quality, last year had one of the biggest droughts I can remember, and was somewhat predictable.

And dont forget there is still 6 weeks of boxing left in the year, we have time for a few more upsets and great fights:deal

Btw the middleweight division has been warming up these past couple of years, and next year is the year it comes alight, just wait:yep

Cant really comment as this is my first FULL year of being a real boxing fan (or what id class as one) but ive seen some quality fights. Im still surprised at how little talk there is on the forum of angulo/kirkland maybe its because everyone was talking about how it would be a murder and kirkland went on to win:huh

There's two threads dedicated to it. An exciting first round followed by a beatdown between two exciting contender types. What kind of thread-based honour does it deserve?

Agree with everyone here, surprised certain people I had in mind haven't shown up. Because it's not a sparse group of people that have hailed abuse at the quality of this year, they are in legion.

I've really enjoyed this years Boxing. There seems to be good fights every other week and the more I see, the more I forget about the whole Pac/May Circus.

Still more to come in 2011 and there's plenty of potential fights out there to make 2012 equally good, if not better!

why are you so mean flea??

I havent seen either of these threads but two sounds like plenty of honour for that fight. Just alot of people predicted angulo would punch a hole in Kirklands head and it would be over inside the first minute let alone the first round, and it turned out to be a decent scrap/

Yeah it has been a great year, but 2010 did have some other decent matches that you didn't mention too:

    Kessler vs Froch
    Marquez vs Katsidis
    and a few others

2011 has been better, but lets not say it shat all over 2010.

This year has been great and better than 2010, but I do like how you balanced the lists out in the opening post

Great fights from last year (that were not mentioned in the OP):

    Vea vs Siale
    Segura vs Calderon I
    Kessler vs Froch
    Mares vs Perez
    Mares vs Darchinyan
    Leapai vs Walker
    Burns vs Martinez
    Cazares vs Nashiro II
    JuanMa vs Marquez
    Poonsawat vs Hosono
    Sykes vs Morris
    Cleverly vs Murat
    Djelkhir vs Cordero
    N'jikam vs Khurtsidze
    Hasegawa vs Burgos
    Fuentes vs Ikehara
    Martinez vs Pavlik
    Burgos vs Escalante
    Luna vs Luna
    Martinez vs Guerrero

Despite all the negativity surrounding 2010, mainly due to certain big fights not happening, it was still a very good year for action, as well.
