By the way, in an interview with Harold Johnson a few years ago, he was asked about that fight, and instead of badmouthing Pastrano, or anyone else, he just said that "Pastrano was a real good boxer". Johnson was and is a classy guy.

    I've also heard:
    - he was doing a lot of coke around the time and wasn't taking training seriously
    - he took the matchup on short notice
    - he came into the match with an injured rotator cuff and the flu
    - had bad management at the time
    - he underestimated Deep Blue
    - he didn't have access to fight footage from Deep Blue's recent past
    - Deep Blue's management ducked a set of rematches and retired Deep Blue so as not to have to face Kasparov again

He definitely got jobbed against Pastrano. Good to hear he doesn't hold a grudge.

Yeah, as much of a fan as I am of Pastrano, you're right as rain about that.

How did you score that one Raging bull?.

I've read before that those two fights are considered among the biggest robberies in japanese boxing history.

It seemed more like a close "coulda gone either way" kind of fight to me.Ebihara started really well then just let Accavallo slowly come back into it.

I do not remember what my exact score was Mantequilla, though I do have it here in one of my notebooks somewhere, but I do remember giving it to Ebihara by about two points. I agree with you that it was no robbery by any means though, it is their first fight that was the one that apparently Accavallo was fortunate to get the decision in, especialy since he was hurt badly in the early going and almost stopped at one point, hence the cautious strategy he employed against him in their rematch.

My card for Accavallo-Ebihara II: 144-143 Ebihara

Rounds 6,7,8,12,13 and 15 for Accavallo.
    Rounds 1,2,3,4,5 10 and 11 for Ebihara.
    Rounds 9 and 14 even.

I'm another one that thinks the fight was close and could have gone either way. Wasn't a robbery. Agree it was a good tactical fight.

That's more or less identical to my card.

After the first five rounds i was thinking that this would be as bad a decision as i had heard it was.

Then Accavallo edged most of the remaining rounds.

great that you mention Capablanca in this chess-thread. He lost the championship against Alexander Aljechin. It was a great duel between two giants of chess.
From the chess matches in boxing I would mention Walcott - Charles, too.
    Best wishes

Yes, great performance by Deep Blue it was. I voted for it in the Sports Personality of the Year contest. I thought it would at least win the overseas award ahead of Tiger Woods.
