In the case of the answer being a resounding "No", we should consider what Germany is doing differently. How is it boxing is thriving there and they can pack arenas for daft fights with foreigners?
Maybe I was being ambitious with the MEN, that is expecting him to reach Hatton status. Fill York Hall.
It is an interesting discussion. Would the fans take to him as one of their own (as the Germans do with the K bros)? Boxing fans like us probably wouldn't mind as long as he was a good fighter but would the mainstream public take to him? We take to foreign footballers etc. but that is because they play for our team. Boxing's an individual sport so I don't see it happening. I'm going to start the thread....
It's really odd how the German fans get behind fighters from Ukraine or Armenia or Yugoslavia or wherever. I suppose the nearest equivilent would be fighters from the Commonwealth fighting in the UK like Honeyghan, or Boza-Edwards, but I can't think of many fighters who the British crowds have 'adopted' as their own at the moment. I suppose Olusegen or Choi are probably the best in that category but are struggling to draw crowds or get their careers moving.
Why is it that they appeal to the German viewer but not the British that being the case? What is it in the culture that makes it this way?
No, actually I'd already answered the question in my head and I came up with the same thing. Football is thriving in Germany, but I'm not sure what else they follow. I suppose its just difficult for me to come to terms with because I'm a sportsaholic and would watch grown men take a dump in a shitting contest if its competitive. Most people only have a certain amount of time to dedicate to sport I suppose.
