This kid was a revelation to me in his recent fight against Quigley. It was a great fight, and Ochieng certainly caught the eye as being something out of the ordinary on the domestic scene. Taking over the Ian Napa mantle, perhaps? - Good jab, also jabbed to the body which is too often neglected. - Excellent short range fighter. I think he does his best work here. - Very good body puncher to the chest especially which we don't see much of. Generally works the body well which is important since he's not a puncher. - Actually moves at the waist which 80% of our fighters fail to do. -Very calm in the ring, not at all uptight or tense which means he can counterpunch more effectively than most. -Good defensive technique. -However, neglects the jab as the rounds progress, noticed in this in some of his other fights on the Tube. -Needs to work on his outside game. Too easily allows his opponents onto him with powder puff punching and average punching form. Does not throw a long left hook or right hand that well which is why Quigley and Valentine managed to successfully harass him. Also throws a terrible windmill right hand like off Street Fighter, cut it out Erick. -Falls in love with the ropes, almost magnetically attracted to them. Okay, so you're good on them but its really not a good Plan A in a British ring, or most rings unless you completely dominate. -Needs to step in with more punches. Too often he's punching without body transition from a flat footed/square on position. Sometimes also doesn't turn his wrist over on his hooks. -Maybe not quite good enough reflexes at the top level? Theres a good deal of talent to work with in this kid, I can see him having ups and downs. Looking forward to seeing how he progresses.
i think he has a great chance to do well in the light middleweight division to be honest i think the division may be alot weaker then people think with Matthew Hall on the decline and Prince Aaroan moving up to Middleweight so when Brian Rose Vacates i feel Erick wont be far off getting a title shot.
He'd give Rose a good shout. I'd pick him to beat Rose personally, not sure if many agree but... Rose is pretty damn easy to hit and a very orthodox fighter. Erick would be a difficult matchup for him.
Him just sitting on the ropes round after round and still landing the shots was certainly something different. You just knew he'd end up stopping him eventually, even though he was backed up on the ropes the whole time.
Seems a nice kid in interviews too. I like the fact he always refers to using skills and making a guy miss and taking advantage. How many British fighters do you even hear say that? It doesn't sound overly important to say I'm going to make a guy miss or whatever, but it does somewhat sum up some our lads mindset that they mostly talk about power, strength and at a push outboxing someone.
I think he's quality too. I like his style - I don't think it will transfer well into higher levels but he will be entertaining and competitive domestically. Always nice to see that type of style and someone who can pull it off well.
He and Brian were matched up to fight a few months ago, before the Arron opportunity became available for Brian. I felt the fight was 50-50 then and not much has swayed my mind since to change my opinion of the match-up.
I've not seen alot of him, outside of the Quigley fight, but he's definitely got one of those styles that I love to watch. He seemed very effective against Quigley, sitting on the ropes and defending well against the onslaught, but I don't know if he'll be as effective against a more seasoned pressure fighter, and one that can dig. I'd love to see him in with Jamie Cox, I think he'd take him to school. What's happening with Cox anyways? I don't think he's boxed since his loss to Sai.
hes been inthe gym a bit, he broke his hand early on against sai, had surgery on it, he wanted to fight again in may but thats been pushed back i think
Cheers. :good He must've broke it while smashing Sai in the bollocks. I guess we'll see if the broken hand was the reason for the performance against Sai. It'll be good to see him back out again, though. Ochieng-Cox, make it happen.
think he was looking to hit somewhere soft to cushion the blow not sure what he wants to do about the belt/sai, think he doesnt mind a rematch but fancies pushing on to british title, him against ochieng would be a good eliminator
entertaining fight with quigley, id watch him again he showed some very nice moves. that said i wonder did a) quigley make the fight more entertaining and flatter him b) could that style work against someone with a bit more savy? Stick him in with someone decent and lets see
