    according to fightnews

"After two years away from the ring, three-division world champion Erik Morales says he is targeting a fight with Juan Manuel Márquez or Marco Antonio Barrera next July. The 33-year-old plans to get himself in shape at his training camp in the Otomí mountains of Mexico and return as a lightweight. “I want to return to boxing soon, but against a good opponent. We have spoken with the people of Golden Boy Promotions to do the fight against Juan Manuel Márquez, but have arrived at nothing concrete. I believe that I have a lot left and I want to go two years more at the maximum to try to conquer a fourth title at different weight and to be the first Mexican in do it,” said Morales.[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] He added that Mexico currently needs a new boxing idol. “We’re in a transition where the last generation is on the way out and the new one is on the way in. Unfortunately, we are some years away from knowing who is going to take the reins of Mexican boxing. We thought it was Antonio Margarito, but was not more than a fight and adios. Jorge Arce hasn’t demonstrated to be more than a mediocre fighter. Really we do not have many figures who have maintained at the top. One is, in spite of his age, Juan Manuel Márquez. Although he has lost some fights, those have been against the better opponents of the division and of the world, but he’s up there at the first level.”

before we get the 20 "Please stay retire Erik" posts in this thread

just want to remind you all, that a bunch of titles in the weight class has become vacant, I wont be surprised to see Morales vs. bum for either of them.

He's had a long rest so a comeback might work out well for him. I thought he beat David Diaz so he might be recharged after this long layoff. I don't see why people think he's washed up. Here's a guy who rarely took tuneups and fought nothing but killers and at a new weight division, he might do well. He could beat barrera at 135 but not Marquez. He needs to stay away from marquez.

If Morales fights JMM and loses, is Morales to be considered prime again?

Don't get the above post (PATSYS)

Basically, if Khan beats Barrera and Morales beat (insert superbum name here) no doubt Khan vs. Morales for the WBO title will be arranged as 'Khan's first defence'. Mark my words.

I'm pretty certain Barrera vs. Khan will at least be for the 'interim' WBO title now it is vacant. Can't see Morales fighting the likes of Funeka, Katsidis or....well, he probably could beat Valero. Seeing as Morale's last fight he looked okay against, admittedly a pretty poor LW but a durable one nonetheless, I think he can still do SOMETHING at LW.

But if he pushes himself too hard rather than taking glorified exhibitions, he will get hurt IMO.

Yea I actually thought he did enough to win against Diaz. I think Morales can still rack up some wins. I just don't think he should fight anyone with good handspeed
