Erik Morales to fight in July

    Erik Morales is set to make his 2nd fight since returning on March after beating Jose Alfaro at the welterweight limit. Now, Morales drops to lightwelterweight to fight against Jorge Rodrigo Barrios(49-4-1, 35 KO'S) for the moment is a 10-rd bout. The bout is scheduled for July 17. Barrios has won his last 2 fights after losing to Juarez in 2008 against Moises Castro(27-11-4, 13 KO'S) and Michael Lozada(34-5-1, 26 KO'S) last November by a 5 round TKO. Barrios has fought 3 times since 2008 and was arrested not that long ago when he killed a pregnant woman in a hit and run accident, also Barrios will be fighting at the 140# limit for the first time in his career.

    Funny thing is. . .Barrios would actually be a pretty good scalp on Morales' resume. If he beats Barrios convincingly I see no reason not to put EM in the top echelon of the JWW div.


    If he beats Barrios put him in with a Malinaggi, Urango or Ortiz type and if he gets past that he's ready for any of the big four:Bradley, Maidana, Alexander, or Khan.

    i have no problem with Morales fighting and would love to see him do so in person but he doesnt need to be fighting top guys or records like that, id pay to see him fight a 5-10 guy

    Im curious to see how he looks at LightWelter! Maybe he will be alot sharper and that spare tire around his stomach will be gone.

    Seen clips. Obviously rusty, but surprisingly he still had some pretty good form. Needs to go a few weights lower but his hands were pretty fast for a chubster.

    Morales is one of those guys where it's impossible to root against him. I'm not a fan of his but I wish him the best and hope he ends his career exactly how he wants to.

    He was a shadow of what he was, his fundementals are still there, but hes slower, and looks like he is a gear behind (reactions, reflexis, speed, ect)

    Ill check out his next fight, but i wont watch him fight a higher level guy until i see some improvement. Hes one of my all time favorite fighters and ive got no desire to see him beat up like he would be vs the best (that is, if he doesnt improve, maybe he shakes off the weight and rust and blah blah, however i dont buy it)

    But if hes fighting C fighters and such, and maybe a few lower B fighters, im there....

    But i will be rooting for him no matter what and am in his corner....
