Morales being overrated a little in this thread... The pac that he fought is not as good as today's version. Erik fought not prime pac as well skill wise ... but despite being cut and that silly glove demands pac only lost by 2 points. Pac moved up to 126 to fight the bigger MAB (his first fight @ 126) Pac moved up to 130 to fight the bigger Morales (his first fight @ 130) Prime Morales 122 Prime Pac 130-135 So prime for prime, a prime 130-135 pac beats prime small 122 Morales any day of the week. and btw... "IF" pac wasn't cut that badly and didn't used pillow gloves he would have knocked Morales out!!! :yep
I saw all of these fights. They were mostly competitive 12 rounders that ended in a UD- not what I would call a 'war', like the Barrera fights were. The kind most great fighters have many of on their resumes, many more than you have listed anyway, before they are considered battle-worn and shot. We simply have a different definition of what a war is.
Its the polished part that means Morales would win clear + Morales was very fast himself at 122. 122 - Morales wins very clear 126 - Morales wins clear enough 130 - either man may win & likely Morales without wear & tear 135 - Pac wins Ps. Dont forget Morales had hard fights before his losses to Pac..... McCullouch Barrera X3 Pacman Hernandez Espadas Chavez Some were predicting that Morales needed a rest BEFORE the 1st Barrera fight in 2000 as he was so active & just came off a gruelling war vs McCullouch. The guy also had something like 180 amatuer fights & its common knowledge that his dad put him in deep from day 1 & fighting in Mexico is always tough anyway. People should think before they type **** on esb sometimes. :thumbsup
The thing people misses, or fail to see, when they consider the Morales victory as a basis for their easy pick against Pac in a prime for prime match-up, or like in this thread (EM facing Pac instead of MAB for a series of fights.): 1) That was a Morales who was hell-bent on proving a point, much like Margarito against Cintron in the rematch. I always think it was stupid to face someone in the calibre of Morales who was coming off a decisive loss, especially against his most hated rival. It was a make or break career fight for him. I actually favoured Morales in that fight, as I remember it, because I knew he would bring everything for that fight. If Pac fought a Morales who was coming off a win against MAB, I say we would have seen a different Erik Morales. 2) The glove issue. If Pac did not win via TKO/KO in their second rematch, I would have brushed this issue off, but he did, and proved that it was a vital element in his being more effective against Morales. 3) Morales was not able to seriously hurt Pac, bloody one eye and all, in any of those rounds in their first fight. To think that was a Pac whose defensive stance on that particular night was the definition of porous! Which would bring us to the next one. 4) If Morales was not able to stun or even wobble Pac, Pac was doing the exact opposite to Morales during the later rounds. In short, Pacs power and speed still can dent Morales legendary chin, while Morales, though his power was enough to make Pac respect it, was nowhere near Pacs level in terms of effect. All these arguments being factored, and all things being considered (i.e. Morales is the superior boxer, Pacquaio is the harder and faster puncher), I would say it is a 50-50 fight anytime of the week. But I am sure it would always be a FOTY contender fight.
Morales dismantled, embarrassed and outworked Pacquiao in their first bout. I would expect a master performance by a peak Morales, virtually a shut out.:smoke
