I watched this last night, and Morales was brilliant. He showed that he was a master boxer when he wanted to be, ducking and making Paulie miss, and returning with left uppercuts, and right hands that repeatedly found there mark. This is probably the best I've ever seen Morales look outside of Barrera I and Pacquiao I. Anyone else seen this performance, Morales just went up in my estimation by quite a bit.
This was Erik`s best FWT performance vs an Ayala that was also near his best & on a roll. Excellent technical display mixed in with perfectly timed bursts of aggression. Addie, this is one of the fights that I suggested you watch of Erik when we were having our Morales-Barrera debates, it shows just what a brilliant fighter he can be when he sticks to his strengths. (It also showed Erik`s true character because it was his 1st fight after his 1st loss & the way he finished rd 12 was sheer will & heart of the highest order, he left no doubt this time, none at all)
I don't know, not many people thought Morales was going to put on a beating without taking so much as a handful of solid shots himself. I think it was the way Morales was winning, he actually looked elusive in there. His head movement was amazing. Many great fighters through history put on there best displays against B levels, Ayala wasn't an elite Featherweight, just as Cleveland Williams wasn't an elite Heavy in 66. And Butcher, absolutely, Morales definitely went up in my estimation when I saw how he handled the spirited Paulie Ayala. He barely had a mark on his face after 12, and as we know, that's huge when you consider it's Morales we're talking about.
I havent seen this fight in a while and yes Morales looked very good but he was hit with much more than a handful of shots from Ayala who was to small at 126 and dint have the power to hurt him. This is Morales best performance at 126,a weightclass in which at times he looked like an average fighter(Chi,Espadas).
This was one of Morales signature performances, but I thought Ayala had lost a step at 122 and def wasn't as good at 126. If Morales fought in this style against Barrera...there wouldn't have been any need for a rematch/trilogy.
Yeah it's a great performance, he shows the gulf in class and i rate that. Ayala was a top fighter, it's just a technicality that i'm getting at, him at 126 isn't really a great win like i said 'outright'. But when mentioning Morales' top wins you can easily include it, (just make sure you mention the manner of victory otherwise i won't accept it!) haha Speaking on quality Morales moves, remember in the Espadas rematch how he finished that? Quality, quality. He did a few outside tricks against Barrera second time round also.
I'sd like to add how dominant he was was just class. At times he totally encompassed the phrase 'a good offense can be a great defense', he just never let Ayala in the fight.
"Solid shots". Paulie only ever landed them when Erik tried to close the show, other than that, he was taking a systematic beating. The only thing that kept him on his feet after 10 rounds was his iron jaw. Morales looked fantastic.
...Barrera is better than both of them, in my judgment, but this thread isn't about that. Why the hell do we have to keep going back to that same old crap, if you ain't got anything relevant to say regarding Erik Morales vs Paulie Ayala, get the **** out.
Morales was a brilliant boxer that loved to fight.... he fought with CONTROLLED aggression in this one, usually he just steps into the trenches for the fun of it, he was just a crazy ******* that neglected his best skills all too often but still won until the body gave out. Morales balance was one of his finest attributes, it was top notch vs Paulie that night.
