Lara seemed a little bit cauteous last night. Maybe it was because he knew that he was fighting his most experienced opponent to date. I agree, the fight was kinda boring, Lara was just trying to land his straight left hand all night long without throwing his other punches. He needs to work more on his combos, uppercuts and side hooks. He is a very solid contender and will possibly be World Champ but he needs to talk to his Cuban buddy Yuriorkis Gamboa to show him his devastating combos!!! Good win for Lara, just needs to develop a bit more...
First take amateur experience and throw it out. It's irrelevant to the topic at hand. As for Pavlik/Brewer, It'd be absolutely comparable if they had similar styles.
Brewer did hit Lara pretty good at the end of the fourth, Lara was " slightly staggered " but not really hurt. That happened as Lara thru a punch and left himself standing the wrong way " his two feet were paralelled to each other instead of one in the front and the other in the back " . But that does'nt mean that he was going to get stopped, he walk to his corner slightly dizzy but he still had his legs with him. And I am very sure that with all his amateur experience if the round was in the beginning or middle he would had survived by " running " until he gets his feet solid again, all good Cuban amateurs are experts at that... Brewer presented a good learning experience for Lara but the fight lasted 10 rounds because Lara was very cautious maybe because he knew that Brewer was his most experienced foe to date so far and he wanted to be safe... If he would had attacked more, he would had KO'ed Brewer in the early rounds... Either way Lara, ( a 9-0 boxer who just turned pro over a year ago ) defeated a 27-12 very experienced fighter!!! You don't see that every day...
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU BROTHER!!! He needs to stop that defence of blocking punches with his arms and standing in there in front of other boxers. Gamboa is " miles " ahead of Lara in terms of speed, combos, raw talent, footwork and power, same for Rigo... Lara is the fourth best Cuban after Gamboa and Rigondeaux, Jhonson...Cuban 154 pounder Yudel Jhonson I believe is way more technical than Lara... Have you seen Yudel Jhonson box? He is a way better technical boxer than Lara and he is also 154lbs, the only thing that Lara has more than Jhonson is pure KO power but Yudel can take him to school...Yudel can also be a very solid World Champ, maybe better than Lara IMO...
If Lara would have "attacked more" he would have made mistakes and Brewer would have knocked him out. Not losing his composure and getting wild anywhere in the fight was one of the things he did right. Another the thing I appreciate about Lara is this: the kid has 10 fights; his last 5 opponents have a combined total of 142 fights. He's on the fast track. I'm not yet willing to say he won't get derailed. Right now, in the aftermath of Lara/Brewer, you have to admit that me, Mexican Jew, Brickhaus, and others called this a hell of alot better than the fools who thought Lara would just blow through Brewer.
The people suggested a blow through on Lara vs Brewer were being irrational. That said, he lost no more than two rounds to Brewer and stopped him. I'd say that the people scoffing at the performance are being as irrational as the people whot hough LAra would clear him out inside 7 rounds or so.
I for one said that Lara was going to TKO Brewer, I did'nt mentioned any rounds!!! Count me out of that one... No, I believe that if Lara would had let his hands go he would had stopped Brewer a lot sooner. The only good thing about Brewer is his defense, he really dodges a lot of punches but his offense and KO power is just mediocre...
i heard Johnson is good but havent seen him yet,is he promoted by Arena? im telling you man, soon we are gonna see cubans contenders in almost every division..it may be a day of watching a huge PPV Gamboa vs Rogondeaux!
I'm not that excited about Lara. He's lumbering, takes a long time to set up, throws a wide left, and I have questions about his chin. Nice fighter, but somewhat limited upside IMO.
I didn't think Lara was impressive tbh. Sure it was a good W over a good opponnet but it wasn't anything to get excited about.
The fact that a fighter with under 10 fights was able to beat a pro like Brewer is something to get excited about. Only two fighters with under 10 fights were able to beat Brewer and they both went on to win middleweight gold. I think Lara is going to follow that progression.
But Brewer is nearly 40 years old and obviously has slowed down. I'm not hating on Lara because he seems like a tough kid and has some talent, but I always have suspicions about guys fighting in middle divisions who have slow feet and wide punches. But best of luck to him.
See but if I wanted to be a dick, I could say that Pavlik didn't fight a top form of Brewer either. After all Brewer was 7-1 going into that fight and neither guy was in their prime. Sides I don't think Brewer was one who relied on his physical attributes anyway. He was always a better technician than anything else. Yer well within your right to think that but I'm willing to bet Lara is a champion by Summer of 2011.
