Isaac Carbonell Portal vs. Twon Herbre Smith, 6 rounds @ light heavyweight

 

Round 1

Carbonell is popping a long quick southpaw jab into the face of Smith, then stepping around him with either a cuffing right hook or a 1-2. Uncreative pressure from the American, following the Cuban around the ring and getting tagged with counters. Big edge in not just height & length but intangibles like poise, speed, timing and relaxation for Carbonell. Smith walking onto combos of right jabs on the face and long pendulum left uppercuts on the body. One such combo puts him down to a knee. Smith not hurt badly, and for the rest of the round tries everything he can to get in, double jabbing, tossing high right hand leads, swiping at the midsection ducking in - but he can't reach with anything.

Round 2

Carbonell is setting everything up with the right jab. Lefts up top and whipping right hooks on the flank by Carbonell. Smith being rocked and holding, but answering with some body shots of his own. Carbonell with too much of a height and reach advantage, skewering Smith several times before he can step close. Carbonell is measuring out his jab, tapping it on the outer wrists of Smith. Carbonell tries catching Smith crouching in with a left uppercut. Mouse by the left eye of Smith now. Right jabs continue thudding in behind Smith's ear while left uppercuts bang into his lungs. Carbonell has barely left first gear.

Round 3

Carbonell is taking a break, playing matador as Smith becomes aggressive rushing him into the ropes flurrying. Carbonell blocking all of Smith's offense, waiting his turn, and then clapping him with a right hook. Smith loses his balance and gets caught between the middle ropes. Carbonell lands a straight left and works the body. Smith walking forward, desperate to force some infighting. Carbonell not cooperating. Carbonell backs Smith up with a triple flick jab and then loops in a left, causing Smith's gloves to bang into his own face. Clinch. Carbonell starting to sling in wide punches in combination downstairs from outside.

Round 4

Carbonell is feeding out jabs lazily into the head of Smith from afar. Carbonell occasionally biting down on his gumshield and becoming fiercer in his disposition, throwing straight lefts that snap Smith's head back and right hooks under the armpit. Smith forced to just keep up his guard and hold it steady the best he can, but now and then goes for broke with a big charging line drive right - usually scouted from a ways off and blocked.

Round 5

Carbonell showing very little urgency to force a stoppage on Smith despite having the opponent vastly outclassed. Carbonell is pawing the right jab into the gloves and lobbing uppercuts at long range. Smith keeps winding his way inside and doing what he can to make a fight of it, but what he can simply isn't enough to surmount the skills deficit and physical disadvantages. At one point Smith gets frustrated and rams into Carbonell in a clinch, which causes the Cuban to fall onto the mat. Moments later the bell rings to end the round and there's some chirping and nearly a brawl but the ref is there between them to stop Smith from rushing Carbonell at his stool.

Round 6

Carbonell is clinching often now, then pushing off with both palms against Smith's torso and feeding him a couple of jabs before repeating. Smith shooting his left jab up at the head only to have it batted down by Carbonell's right glove or ducked as Carbonell folds up his spindly legs in a deep squat. Smith keeps walking Carbonell into the ropes and attempting to flurry; Carbonell is throwing a damp towel over him with his long arms enveloping him when he does. The contest sputters quietly to an end.
