I was watching an interview with him, he said he was always confident he could beat Joe Frazier or George Foreman. What do you think? i think Shavers/Frazier could go either way and i think Foreman would ko Shavers early. Shavers hit harder than Foreman, according to Ken Norton and Ali, but Shavers was lacking in several areas. He had awesome power, right up there with Tyson, Marciano or Foreman but his questionable chin and stamina issues prevented him from being as succesful as those guys.
In "theory" a man who punches like Earnie Shavers would have a chance to stop anyone if he caught him at the right time... While I agree with this logic in "principle", it didn't always work that way.. Earnie was beaten by plenty of lesser fighters, and even though he had enough sting to take out Foreman or Frazier, I don't see him as having the skills necessary to turn the trick.
He's a fighter. Of course he says he's confident he could beat them. He also said when comparing different eras with his that he probably beat ten or fifteen Holyfields or some absurd garbage like that. It's meaningless.
Styles make fights....and Jerry Quarry beat Shavers the worse of all. Quarry could box, move, was smart, had Gil Clancy in his corner (Shavers had Don King), and when he hurt Shavers, he was unafraid and moved in and finished Shavers off with Jerry's own decent power.
If Shavers had got in the ring with the post Manilla 1976 Frazier,he'd have stood an excellent chance. Before Manilla ? No way ! I'd also have given Earnie a 50/50 shot at a post Zaire (1976-77) incarnation of Foreman. The Foreman before and during the Kinshasa fight with Muhammad Ali,however, always knocks out Shavers.
I think Earnie would always lose to Joe Frazier, Frazier was one of those jokers you literally had to kill to beat him, and I can't see Earnie being the one.He has a better shot at post-Zaire Foreman, but I still think George takes that one.
He may have been the best puncher in all of boxing, but he wasn't the complete package. It's probbly better to be able to do a lot of things pretty good than to be the best at just one thing. I am starting to belive that the real purpose for punching power is to gain and assert control rather than getting quick knockouts, not that there is anything wrong with quick knockouts.
Shavers is SO OVERATED now, he was but an average contender and I was a fan of his. Norton is his best win and Kenny was starting to slip. Losses to Holmes, Stallings, old Ali, Lyle, Mercado, Quarry balanced against wins over old Bugner, shot Ellis, green Young, prime Clarke and Smith and a draw with still improving Young does not add up to competing with Foreman or Frazier. Earnie hit so hard he could possible ko anyone but in real life he'd be 10 to 1 against these two.
Shavers ( while having great power ) Had a chin, that could be gotten too... Foreman being tall with better reach, would get to Shavers before Shavers got to him. And Big George had better recuperative powers. Against frazier, it would ne interesting to see if `Smokin` Joe could stay out of early trouble. I think that Frazier would get close enough to kind of smother Shavers power, and once Joe started ` smokin` Shavers is in trouble. Too much pressure and firpower, if Quarry did it to Shavers, scary to think of what Smokin Joe would do. i would however, give Shavers a punchers chance against Frazier. Mostly because Frazier could start of slow at times...
For what its worth Foreman said hes glad he never fought Shavers. I think George would beat Ernie but i understand Foreman being wary of the one guy who could outpunch him.
Frazier-Shavers is a pick'em fight,I reckon. Frazier's unquestionably the more skilled and refined of the two,but his own punch resistance may let him down against such a dangerous puncher.
