A guy who always came to fight and win. Had some dubious losses like to Stander, Stallings, and later on Bernardo Mercado. Not that these guys were cans but could you picture Frazier or Foreman losing to any of those men? Shavers would have had a puncher's chance against the rusty and sloppy Foreman who warred with Lyle. Also, I think he could beaten the post Manilla Frazier who was totally spent. Other than that he would stand no chance against any versions of either Foreman or Frazier. I mean, he always has the proverbial "puncher's chance" against anyone not named Chuvalo right?
I believe it was the late, great Jim Murray that wrote that Shavers had an atom bomb of a right hand, but a rickshaw for a delivery system.
Quarry was not smart . He was not so smart vs Chuvalo and was even dumber vs Frazier : he had Frazier hurt and didn't even move forward 4 all of his supposed "chin , bravery and savvy" .
Styles make fights and Shavers had at least a one in three shot of KOing Frazier ... Joe came straight at you and started slow .. not a god formula to fight Shavers ... While I favor Foreman if he used his jab to hold Earnie off but if he was dumb and went wild who knows ...
Thankfully no. In both cases, I think that Frazier's and Foreman's chins become the deciding factor, with Frazier's defence being another one (although Shavers had a good uppercut that could get through). All else being equal, in battles of punchers of roughly equal ability- assuming the champs' skill makes up for Shavers' superior raw power- I pick the puncher with the sterner jaw, and that's not Shavers in either of these hypothetical bouts.
Shavers could hit like hell...but he had stamina issues...and he couldn't deliver the big punch when he needed to...
He could potentially beat them, both would come at him and not be that hard to hit. Both could knock him out too, both are more durable with better stamina and both are better in fighters. I reckon he can KD both though
On any night,,,,,,,,Earnie could Knock-out anybody.. Virtually every punch he threw was a 'bomb'. His Knock-out of Jimmy Ellis was a thing of beauty.
To rephrase Shavers has a better shot than many with his power, accuracy, speed and early onslaught. Frazier was beat by a similar early onslaught from Foreman and Foreman nearly beat by an early onslaught from Lyle. Hence it's more likely than many match ups. So you shop at Asda BE, always thought you were American
Just about any fighter who fought at the level he did believes they would've beaten anyone that didn't actually beat them. Shavers never would have made it as far as he did if he thought to himself "well....this guy is all around more talented and a bad style match up for me...I'm gonna get beat up tonight." He made it as far as he did by thinking "I can knock buildings over with my punches and I'm a great fighter and I'll use my own strengths that I'll use to knock him out."
Shavers lost to every significant heavyweight fighter on his resume accept norton so why the **** would I pick him to take out foreman or Frazier? Overrated Shavers gets KTFO in both fights
Oh jesus.. Shavers/Frazier. Frazier bobs a few times, comes up with a left hook. Shavers goes down. Shavres gets up and tries to back paddle, Frazier jumps on him and pounds him till he falls to his knee and doesn't get up. Round 1 TKO Shavers/Foreman. Foreman comes out throws a wide uppercut, Shavers goes down. Shavers gets up on rubber legs, Foreman clubs him till he stays down. Round 1 TKO Long live Earnie Shavers! The Bob Satterfield of the 70s without as many good wins.
Gooseman,,,,,,,,, Maybe you should start an Earnie Shavers Fan Appreciation thread.... Every Earnie fight was exciting...
not any good wins at all : only Ellis , Young & Norton and another over Young which was converted in2 a draw , and then Roy Williams and I might find a few more .
Shavers showed nothing in his career that he would be able to compete with Frazier or Foreman. Shavers power is way overrated he has no brutal or savage KO's against anyone with a Chin or pulse at the time.
