Two smooth as silk operators. Terrell is the better puncher but JY is probably more of a slickster. It would be highly skilled but not very exciting to watch. Who would have won it?

I don't know about this one because if young could slip terrell's jab then he would be one step closer to beating Terrell and that right there is a big part of this fight.
I would say this is a draw. they are both technically sound and capable of beating eachother. but i don't really know anything about Terrell besides he fought Ali and Williams, he was tall, and he had a great jab. but I have watched Jimmy young a lot. he's got a good jab himself and a decent counter right. he fought great competetion, In Ali, Lyle, foreman, and norton.
i certainly think this would go the distance. Jimmy young is very durable and Terrell has a decent chin himself ( taking that Beating from Ali and staying on his feet, plus he use to spar with Liston a lot)
Jimmy young was very hard to hit flush in his prime, but I have to wonder if Terrell has good enough punching accuracy to land on him. I do think young could hit Terrell though.
    Draw IMO

A draw is not unreasonable. However, my inclination is to favor Terrell by decision on the basis of his height and effective use of reach. Ernie was a fast starter earlier in his career, often flooring opponents in the first round. He could be aggressive and physically wearing, as he showed in stopping Bob Foster, and he displayed an effective body attack in his late career TKO of Garcia. (Incidentally, Garcia would be a good one to ask about this, as he lost to Jimmy over ten rounds less than two years after Ernie beat him.) Terrell had underrated two hand power. He dropped Foster with a right, and Spencer with a hook.

Jimmy could win by slipping Ernie's jab and countering to the body. Young was an excellent body puncher, and he thoroughly exploited Foreman downstairs. Terrell's guard protected his body reasonably well though, certainly better than a wide open Foreman protected his. I have no issue with anybody favoring a Young win. It's just my expectation that Ernie's initiative would trump Jimmy.

Terrell could very well win a Young fight in the same way he won against Eddie Machen...by utilizing his natural physical advantages...the long left jab of course and the grabbing and leaning...also much like he did with Foster. It would have been an ugly match with both men frustrating the other, but with Terrell having those previously stated physical advantages...a lot of punches by both men missing, very little solid blows landing...much cuffing, fouling, and grabbing..I'd have to go with Terrell in a very close, again, ugly match. Young was not dynamic enough in his offense to score on Ernie like Ali did.
