Take a look [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K70RUqCBtj4&feature=related[/ame] outjabbing the great Bob Foster
He traded almost exclusively on the style of "jab and grab"...he had an excellent jab..it was a heavy, persistent jab...then he would tie up or lean on an opponent.
I have to say that he was a gifted boxer.. Not always the most exciting guy to watch and certainly lacked snap to his shots, but a reasonably good technician.
He was so much better against Bob Foster and Thad Spencer than he was against Ali, that I sometimes wonder just how badly his thumbed eye hampered him with Ali. He had a credible run as WBA Champion, but one defense in 1966 (over Doug Jones) against six defenses of the World Title by Ali guaranteed that Ernie would never fly as a viable alternative. (It also didn't help that Terrell was going 15 full rounds in his title fights, while Muhammad was stopping everybody except Chuvalo and Terrell himself.)
Terell was a solid fighter. Tall, with solid skills, and he could clinch like an octopus when he needed to.
He was a good infighter too by looking at this clip, he was unfortunate to be in the era of Fraser and Ali, I haven't seen the Fraser Terrell fight but I will look out for it, of course infighting with Fraser was suicide.
Terrell was a solid fighter in the 1960's. Unfortunately running into a peak Ali took the fight out of him. He was completely shut out and humiliated by Ali's taunts. He performed better than the scorecards indicate in his next fight against Thad Spencer but I thought he lacked his earlier confidence and Spencer was able to take advantage of it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G29XRlHXRNE[/ame] He wasn't much of a puncher nor was he exactly fast and he didn't always take full advantage of his height but Terrell did have a great jab and was an adept spoiler, able to make almost any fight a close contest. These days he is mostly known for the Ali fight, but he had a good run from 1963 to 1967 and was one of the better heavyweights of the era.
Spencer was able to deck Terrell in the 2nd with that good right cross counter..I thought he needed that and a strong finish to get the nod over Terrell..and Thad was decked by Terrell two rounds later...it was indeed closer than the scoring indicated. Terrell was past it then and would lose his next fight with Manuel Ramos..Terrell was an awkward but good fighter with skills.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Terrell is the most under rated win on Ali's resume. Tall with a great jab and durability. Hard guy to fight.
Much of what's said about Terrell is garbage; the press knocked him without sufficent reason. Terrell's jab was excellent. Terrell fought somewhat stiffly, but even so, he was very effective. In his prime, Terrell was one of the best and worthy of his high ranking. By the way, I disagree with the view that Ali could have knocked Terrell out. From watching the films, it seems to me that Terrell survived because of his defense and recuperative power. Look at the way Terrell holds his long arms tightly against his ribs, with his gloves covering his head: it's almost as if he's holding a shield. Terrell could also hit a bit, which explains why Ali was careful not to get overaggressive.
