Ali couldn't stop him, I genuinely think he just couldn't put him away.

Do you think these could tho?

    Prime Joe Louis
    Prime Rocky Marciano
    Prime Larry Holmes
    Prime Lennox Lewis

I think prime Lennox could have stopped him just because of the sheer size and power that comes along with it.

Yeah, probably the hardest one for Terrell to hold in clinches. Lewis wasn't just big and strong, he could be dirty as hell too.

I can see Lewis smacking him as he trys hold him
He'd make it painful for him.

Yes I can see Lewis getting him out of there.

And truthfully Ernie Terrell did not possess punching power, all he really had was size and a good left jab. Ernie usually wore down his opponents by wrestling with them and leaning his entire 212 lbs on them by causing extreme fatigue, Lewis has nothing to fear as Ernie is no Oliver McCall or Hassim Rahman.

Louis and Lewis would for sure.

Marciano might have to settle for a decision, but judging by how depleted Terrell was by an injured William’s body punching I’d imagine Marciano gets him out late.

Holmes would have to settle for a decision for sure

I'd also like to mention that though Terrell did go the distance, he was never really the same after this fight. Only picking up wins against obscure names from that point on. I don't think pre-Ali Terrell would've lost to Spencer and especially Ramos.

Potentially yes. Muhammad Ali certainly dealt Ernie a hellacious beating but also spent a lot of time taunting him. I’m fairly confident that Joe Louis and Lennox Lewis would score stoppages. Marciano might have struggled a bit with his size. Holmes I’d likely another decision but might have stopped him late

It was a bad beatdown, but my guess is that the damage was mostly mental.

I’d go with the 3 L boys, Louis and Lewis on par, Larry dragging behind.

Ali had had Terrell going round 7 of their fight IIRC. His arms already glued to his head, Terrell tightened his guard that much more thereafter

Louis and Lewis had appreciably more power - and Louis knew how to go to both head and body - he would’ve badly damaged that exposed body.

If that beating of the body wasn’t enough in itself - it would’ve brought the guard down for some good night head shots.

I’ve seen the sparring footage of Liston and Terrell, though Sonny is taking it easy, I thought he handled the octopus Terrell very well - I know he’s not on the list - but, imo, Liston KOs Ernie also.

Ali failed to knock out Terrell, and he had his own personal reasons (What's My Name).
Lewis could knock out Terrell, but the question is whether he would want to, or whether he would be satisfied with a points win.
Because I wouldn't argue whether Lewis or Terrell is a better boxer.
Imho Lewis would be able to knock out Terrell.

As someone who admittedly didn't watch the sparring session in quite some time, how did Liston deal with Terrell if you don't mind me asking? I've been extremely busy with college, work, and life, I'll get to it later. But I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I've always been upset Liston missed out on him. If Liston got past Ali, I believe his next defense was gonna be against Terrell.

Funnily enough, Liston was the referee in the first Williams-Terrell fight and kept heckling Williams for not finishing Terrell soon enough. I believe he faced a bit of heat for not stopping the fight sooner.

Terrell was hurt badly by a left hook by Williams iirc (from contemporary reports, never watched the fight as it wasn't available) around the third or so and never really recovered. But he was absolutely done in the 6th when Williams floored him and was nothing more than a punching bag from that point on.

In any case, not sure who I'd go for in a fight, but as a ref, I'd go with Liston over Louis any day.

Do you think Ali wouldn't or couldn't stop Terrell?
I really think he couldn't, I think early on he realised it was gonna be a long night, but also he had that beef with Ernie so we had the 'what's my name?'
That's just what I've come to conclude watching the fight, my friend.

This is a very difficult, and very interesting question.
You even opened my eyes, that I made a mistake in my post that you just quoted.
Since Mohammad Ali had his own personal reasons there are 2 possible scenarios:
    1a.) could knock out Terrell
2b.) he wanted to beat Terrell for 15 rounds; to punish him as long and as much as possible :)
