Terrell. Slightly better class of fighter, bad style matchup for Shavers, durability, and big size advantage. Shaver is very overrated, if he could land consistently he might stop Terrell but a stoppage is the only way hes winning. Terrell was too durable to go out with one shot, and too savvy to get hit often enough for Shavers to put his punches together. Adding to this that Shavers had awful stamina and you can see some tense early moments for Terrell but he would eventually take over by the fifth or sixth round and run away with a decision or a TKO.
I would have a strong fancy for Mr Terrell, once he hit his stride, his fights against Big cat williams (Return) Folly, Jones, Machen and Chuvalo showed he was a hard man to dislodge, very good at slowing down the pace and negating, If Earnie tries to use skill, as in Henry Clark 1st, he will simply play into Ernies hands, Shavers must attack like he did in Clark II and his other big wins, but these were not generally acheived against a cautious points pincher, who will seek to come on later in the fight, traditionally when Earnie is winding down, Ellis was excitingly attacking Earnie when Nailed, Norton had No negation skills when Jumped on by Earnie, Ernie will not be ashamed to Cling on for dear Life when Required, Ernie had no reluctance to win ugly, i think he could cope with the sporadic shavers flare-ups, Ernies strenghs would i feel capitalise on shavers weaknesses. so a win ugly for Mr Terrell, but of course this is Shavers....if he hits the target bang on.....
Terrell I thought was very fortunate to win the decision over Cleveland Williams but Shavers did not have the skill or the speed of the "Big Cat" to fall back on if he couldn't get Terrell out of there. Terrell would have to cling on for his life at times but he would take a decision as long as he can survive Shavers's onslaught. Relying almost solely on his left hand allows Shavers some power punching opportunities with his right hand though. I have to say that Shavers was quite effective with his boxing strategy against Ali but then again he did not capture the decision there.
I agree that Terrell takes a clear points verdict in this one. As has been said though, one right hand from Shavers could be the equaliser.
Just being the devils advocate but I think Shavers could "Jeff Merit" Terrell. I know Ernie was past his best but Shavers is WAY better than Merit.
Terrell by comfortable decision, his jab would be too much of a puzzle for the simple Shavers to solve.
