What would have been the result of a 15 round contest for Terrell's WBA tile between these two? For some reason their paths never crossed. I believe that Terrell would have won his customary decision over Folley in a bout filled with the jab and grab repetiore that Mr. Terrell was so proficient with.
Whats frustrating in thinking about a bout between these two is that Zora had the skills to outbox Earnie if only he could have lit a fire under himself. That means I don't think he would have-Earnie by an oh so boring UD, and strong use of his jab.
Yes, to be totally honest, the bout would probably been excrutiatingly boring, as bouts between two good technicians often can be. But alas, I've become so fond of these kind of bouts in my old age..boxing as chess..it's the higher level of boxing, IMO, an appreciation of the technicians of the sport.
My hat's off to you McGrain, and I stand corrected..back in '63 the two met...an education for me. I'm even more impressed by the "rediscovered" Ernie Terrell.
Yes, I think Terrell was quite good against those 6' tall tecnician type guys like Machen and Folley, and Jones, though Doug may have been a little shy of 6'.
To beat Folley, Machen, Williams, Jones, Foster, Chuvalo etc and yet to be consistantly rated behind some or all of them is strange-sometimes he isn't even considered when the top men of the period are discussed. Shades of Akiwanda but Ernie achieved much more.
What blackballs Ernie is that "what's my name fight" with Ali, and the glory that the lib sportswriters heap on Ali..making Terrell the "uncle Tom" villain in that fight who was "carried" by Ali so that he could torture him for his impertinence in using the name "Clay"...bull****..bull****..and more bull****...Terrell wasn'r "carried" he's undersold inasfar as his toughness and defensive capabilities were concerned..sure he lost the fight, but he was also fouled repeatedly by Ali, as in being repeatedly being thumbed in the eye, and in fact Terrell had an eyepatch on as evidence..on an episode of Wide World alongside Howie Cosell while reviewing the fight on film. Now Cosell was probably not the most unbiased person for Ernie to make his case too, but it was backed up on review of the film..and yes, I know that Ernie himself had an "educated thumb" himself that opponents had accused him of using..and that didn't help Terrells case, esp. amongst the worshipful defenders of Ali in the boxing media at the time.
This is probably because Terrell is mostly remebered by the way he lost to Ali. He showed great courage in this one, but looked quite one-dimensional. So people forget how good he really was. Personally I like his bout against Foster. Two lanky technicians getting it on.
Red, Earnie told me in '72 that Ali did thumb him in the first round, but that it was only one time. That one time though messed him up for the whole fight as he told me all he could see was a blurred image in front of him for the whole fifteen rounds.
I believe that he would have probably accounted for himself better than he did if he wasn't fighting with a painful handicap. He would have lost anyway, but he would have done better IMO.
I worked with a dude who was friends with Terrerll's father. One day he's over seeing his Dad when Ernie shows up. They're in the backyard and my old co-worker asks him about the Ali fight. Terrell starts to explain how Ali rubbed his face in the ropes, when Terrell's father interjected with, "The only thing that man rubbed in your face that night was leather." Funny stuff. Scartissue
