I've been digging through British Boxing history the past few days and at the same time have seen Errol Christie mentioned several times on these boards as being one of the biggest amateur "busts" of all time. The UK's Mark Breland I suppose. Figured I'd post this up. I'm sure its been years since some of the posters here have seen this. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ez_CLXC68Q[/ame]
I'd never seen that fight so thanks for hunting it down and posting it. I remember the Christie-Kaylor build up and fight very well. Ugly stuff.
No problem, only recently saw the fight myself. Interesting piece of British boxing history. What was so ugly about the build-up?
Shades of Hagler/Minter eh'. :-( Why was racism so prominent in boxing back then? I've always been told/heard that the UK was more of a tolerant melting pot then other countries.
I think the British (certainly the English) just hide their hatreds better than some others. You are right about the element of race in boxing. It was only 1983 when Gerry Cooney out-earned Larry Holmes in their title fight based on nothing more than skin pigment. At least we don't have the "White Hope" stuff any more in the heavyweights. We ended up with champions as white as they come, but they're as dull as ditchwater...
The best thing about the video is that - looking at Christie's record and seeing a KO1 defeat against someone called Jose Seyes I picture a rugged mexican fighter, not a Belgian with a poodle perm.
