I was a big fan of his from before the Lo Greco fight until just before Algieri. 1. He hasn't had a KO since Oluoch 2. He has only fought the leftovers of other fighters aside from Lartey who rocked him and completley turned off his game plan 3. It took him 5 rounds to knockout Algieri who was beat up by Pac and Provodnikov as well as he stood in front of Spence the entire fight. Algieri was a C level opponent. 4. He only called out Thurman because Mayweather was whispering in his ear. He don't want no part of Thurman or Porter. I see Porter being the guy to knock him out. 5. His footwork is **** and he looks stationary and robotic.
I find it hard to believe that he is overrated. He is starting his career and people think he could be a champ and have the potential to unify some title. It is wait and see in his regard.
I think that he is a bit over rated myself. He is still a bit raw. He is not as crisp with his punches and his fundamentals are flawed. He doesn't have blazing speed or a world class defense. He is not a bum by a long shot, he is just not as top flight as a lot of people give him credit for being.
He's never even been tested by someone sturdy with the exception of Lartey, there are a lot of questions to say the least. I thought that Algieri would test him because of his speed and durability but it didn't go that way.
I've not seen enough of him to comment either way though if you go off the reactions of those in his division Spence isn't a subject they wanna talk about, that I have noticed.
I agree with a lot of what is being said. He has great potential just some more to learn in the defense department. I would have liked to see Algieri do what he does best and that is get on the bicycle and box. He would have been a great test and have answered some questions about Spence that I have but somehow Algieri got it into his ear that he was a power puncher and that he would make Spence feel his power. That worked with Khan but not Spence. I don't think Algieri can recover from it honestly, I like Algieri as a fighter he was just thrown to the wolves after Provo and didn't have enough experience. I don't think his own team even expected him to get past Provodnikov tbh.
He passes the eye test to say he is overrated is a guess the same as rating him high is we just don't know yet until he beats xyz.
