Hey Joeywill. When you say prime Donald Curry, the one that kayoed WBC Champion Milton McCrory in Dec 1985?
I have more respect for Curry, so I pick him. He was undisputed and dominant for awhile. Spence was neither.
If Curry was at his most sharpest then I can see him doing a surgical-like performance on Spence much like Crawford did. Curry’s laser like counter punches and in-fighting would be a nightmare for Spence I would think.
probably Donald. Although when he moved to 154 he started to move his head less and lead with his head, but he was such a great counterpuncher a welterweight and so sharp.. Underrated today because of the Honeyghan and McCallum losses. On the night he fought Milton not many welterweights have an easy fight with him...
Prime Curry would WRECK Spence..... And Crawford too. Any welterweight that's doing his best fighting after the age of 30 isn't doing his best fighting....
I think that Donald Curry was very surgical when he fought Colin Jones in Jan 1985, he looked very sharp, his combinations were crisp, he had very good head movement in his win over Jones.
amazing fight since both are from Big D aren't they? Curry was in a much tougher era, and a guy he beat (Starling) was probably in my mind more accomplished and could have been Spence.
Curry and his brother were both champions. Curry was insane as an amateur he had a record like 400-4. The boycott in the 1980s cost Curry a possible gold medal.
who can complain bout 400-4.. Had he had less it might have helped him last at the pro rank. that is a little too much in my mind.. Hearns an :Leonard had a lot, but they had in the 160 range.. which is more logical.
That 1980 group was pretty good. Who was in it? James Shuler was there wasn't he? I remember thinking how many guys related to the Olympics that Thomas Hearns fought. Leonard from 76, Shuler from 1980- Virgil Hill from 1984 and Maynard from 1988? And he sparred Breland from 84 and Hembrick was one of his sparring partners from I think 88. It would have been interesting had Tommy fought Sugar Ray Seales and added that year. I suppose all of the boxers are interconnected if they had big amateur careers also since Tommy also boxed Howard Davis and Aaron Pryor in the amateurs.
