Spence listed Ghost as a possible opponent While Ghost looked like **** in his last bout, its a huge step up for Spence. Member, Ghost also roughed up Thurman....
It's a nice step up in class for Spence. I'm not sure how Ghost would feel being looked at not as a contender anymore, but as a stepping stone.
I imagine Guerrero will want a couple more tune up sort of fights after recent struggles relative to prior success.
Guerrero roughed up Thurman? Did they fight a second time and I missed it? Guerrero has looked terrible since Berto.
Well, he's looked terrible in all his welterweight bouts. He got an eye closed by Berto, struggled with Aydin, got beat-up and softened up by Kamegai, and Thurman got the left-overs. Kamegai ruined the boy. Martinez also almost KtFO of Guerrero. He's not a step-up at this point. They need to be looking at someone else for Spence.
Guerrero seems to be on the cash out diet. He doesn't have the spirit in him anymore. We saw this with Tyson and Morales fighting Danny twice.
He has a lot going against him in this department... He has moved up in weight many divisions. Underrated is that he held titles at 126 and 130. He achieved high rank at 135 in his short stay before having major shoulder surgery that forced one year out of the ring. He leapfrogged 140 on his return (the injury cancellation of Guerrero/Maidana to be his 140 debut is still one that I think back on disappointed and feel we would have gotten a FOTY caliber bout). Every single one of his bouts at 147 resulted in long beatings. Even those that he won clear were taxing. Berto, Kamegai, and Thurman fights particularly each were highly damaging fights for him. Aydin, Mayweather, and the last Martinez fight are all underrated in this respect too. That's all 6 of his fights at 147. And he has been on the cash out diet for a quick minute as well. I don't think that will fare well for his record/legacy from here out. He's a 32 year old, 40 fight veteran who once held a title at 126 and is struggling to remain at the top at 147 now. Sh!t happens. --- Great guy though, from everything I've seen. I hate religious types, but I just saw the other day he donated 100 K straight to a foundation he started. I know he has gotten some big pay days of late but that is class, regardless of tax write offs and it being his own foundation, etc. I've seen him do similar things in the past as well. Always great to hear. He has had a respectable weight climbing career, highly entertaining fights at 147 lately, and had exposure on American television throughout his career but he still seems to get a good amount of hate on here. He's not special anymore and maybe he never was but he accomplished more than some seem to know, based on what I read.
It makes more sense for Spence that putting him straight in there with Thurman or Porter (even though I give him a chance in both fights, it's a big step up) If I was managing Spence career, I'd next target amature rival Sammy Vasquez Jr, then Robert Guerrero, then Devon Alexander, then the possible loser of a Porter v Thurman fight in about a year, before moving onto the winner.
Nice fight for Spence. Guerrero didn't look so hot last time out and Spence would probably be catching him at the right time. Guerrero is still going to be a dangerous opponent but Spence beats him and puts a big name on his record.
Hey, I don't think much of Guerrero (probably a borderline top 20 WW) but this is Spence's 18th pro fight. In Dapidran's 18th pro fight he was facing 20-7-4 Mike Luna. The ever-dangerous Luna would be knocked out by Dapidran in the first round and would suffer the same fate in his next fight against, 29-26-10, Rudy Idanio in the second round. His next time out Luna was stopped once more in the first round by ,22-14-2, Melvin Melvin Magramo before retiring. But Luna should not be too harshly criticized as a Dapidran opponent as he was succeeding the 0-2-0 Sun-Yul-Lee and 1-10-1 Ippo Galla in Dapidran's previous two fights. :yep
Ghost is a high end gate keeper. Hes good at what he does (sloppy boxing brawling), he wins the fights that he should, and he elevates the talent that beats him with a known name on their resume.
