I dont think anybody has mentioned Kaensak sor Ploenchit. 2 time Lumpinee champ and fighter of the year 2x (89 & 90) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU_9maW7IDs[/ame]
per my mate fletcher Prospect Watch: Petchpanomrung http://fightsportasia.com/2012/03/22/prospect-watch-petchpanomrung/ Absolutely sick youngster. This 16yr old kid broke the Lumpinee top 10 at super-bantamweight, and got matched up against former Rajadamnern champion Thong. He head kicked him unconscious to the mat, winning a title shot at the 2011 Fighter of the Year, and competes for the belt only a FORTNIGHT later, taking the best fighter in the world, Sam-A, right to the wire. Top 5 prospect in the sport. [yt]0OZM_CQP9SM[/yt]
OoooooooH yeahhhh!!! Well dug out Yaca, great clip. Boy, the 80s and 90s really was the golden age. Kaensak had suberb timing and awarness. Vicious low kicks and I love his elbow counters!!:happy Total commitment with every technique thown in true balls out Muay Thai spirit! Thanks for the clip. Fast feet! Helluva a kick, he read that situation really well leading up to it for his tender years. I haven't seen enough of him in that short clip and I don't doubt his ability, but dare I say up until that point in the edited clips he looked a little one dimensional? Almost purely kicking a guy that pretty much had him covered defensively against the kick? (Just playing Devil's advocate). Thanks for the clip of him, one to follow for sure. If anyone's got any other clips it'll be interesting to see more of him, particulalry the fight against Sam-A.
Boran.....Is there one fighter that the thai writers and fans consider the Greatest of All time ? Or it is all debatable ? I mean, we have the discussion between Robinson and Greb in Boxing about the Greatest of All time.......who would be "Sugar Ray Robinson of Muay Thai" ? What´s the general feeling in Thailand in terms of The Greatest ? They discuss it often...or no ?
Samart for sure. Even after the Fenech fight ;-) I can't be certain but I don't think it's an often debated subjected. But you can get opinions on the best guys by mentioning their name to most Thai blokes I find...asking about Venice Borkorsor is my biggest vice over there :deal
Man, think about it, the Greatest Muay Thai fighter ever and a very good fighter in Boxing rules as well, Very Good one ! Samart was really from another world Impressive feats !
Flea is pretty much spot on to the fact it's not really debated. Most die hard fans are involved in the sport so their view will be jaded by era, gym links and what they managed to see or read about in wahtever media at that time. Remember it's a vast Muay Thai machine that year in year out is producing top level fighters like the US produces burger joints. There are so many great fighters that the current crop of fighters always dominate the thinking. It's only comparatively recently, say over the last 15 years that VCDs and TV's have become comonplace in many households, very few have a computer, so previous to that many didn't have the chance to see some of the greats. They only heard or read about them and occasinally saw them on a TV somewhere. These days the TV stations never play reruns of the past and until One Somchai released a gaggle of VCDs of past fights DVDS and VCDs were and are still not commonplace, Thais don't really buy them it's mostly forigners who buy them. As we've touched on in previous posts on the whole it's not followed for the same reasons as we follow our boxers in the west "the love of the sport" it's the gambling. Think of how horse racing is followed mixed with a little star recognition and your almost there. Don't get me wrong there are hardcore fans that do follow and talk about it but they tend to be involved in the sport anyway. I imagine if you asked an average Thai who the greatest was the'd say Nai Kannomtom, and he's from the 18th century!!!!! That's the trouble in Thailand they too easily forget their greats. They must think your a nutjob asking about Borkorsor, I'm surprised they even remember him! deal
"Touche", very good. I have this image of all these Thai scatching their heads, thinking your some kind of exotic busspotter there to write down bus numbers!
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTIxMB00oSM&feature=related[/ame] Here is a clip of Boonleang Sor Thanikul brother of the ATG Boonlai Sor Thanikul mentioned a few pages back. It's a master class in defensive grit and heart on the back foot against relentless preassure from a skilled opponent. Watch this one all the way through as it turns into a bit of an elbow fest.:yep
