I thought of you when I made my post of Sagat, considering your expertise. do you know of any video of Sagat's boxing career? Do you have any more info on his boxing career? Sorry if you have already posted it earlier 54 pages to look through...

Too bad its only a small clip, Sagat and Dieselnoi fought 3 times with Sagat winning 2 of them. would love to see how sagat beat what I consider one of the most physically imposing fighters in combat sports history.

I'm gonna' check if I have the Gomez fight BUT IIRC loads of people died that night; might not have survived.

And agreed. Seems likenhe used his superior speed to get off first but no doubt they would've been hard-fought bouts, you only have to see the high kick Diesel landed to see what freakish proportioned fighter he was!

Songchai Ratanasuban: Is he the top promoter? Good for the sport? Bad?

Lumpini champions/Rajadamnern champions: is one always better than the other?

    Many thanks!

That’s is a great post with some great clips Yaca.:good

I hang my head in shame, it’s taken us 50 pages before we posted him. We should all be tied to one of Buakaw’s banana trees & battered into quivering piles of broken bloodied flesh & bone!

Sakad Petchyindee also known as Sakad Porntawee (that’s the Thai you posted Yaca). Over 300 fights with 151 KOs :scaredas: ………as you said right up their top 5 AT MT GOD :bowdown:bowdown, dominated at home, 3 Raja & 3 Lumpinee belts, which just about says it all really. Not only a big dog at home but also a massive trailblazer on the international scene. Sent on a mission from Thailand to expose western Kickboxing for the useless pile of shite it was, he was a major part in kick starting the striking revolution that Muay Thai became outside Thailand, he helped start the fire, international fights like his spun all those “legends” & “myths” about devastating low kicks & brutal elbows that helped to inspire movies like Kickboxer and got a generation to dump their silky satin trousers, kick off those naff little kick boots & poncy shiny shinpads!

Talking of which, both the clips of Ronnie & Sugarfoot are interesting time capsules on a period that had massive impact on me. Both Ronnie & Cunningham were guys I looked up to along with all the Dutch boyz, but they'd come out of a western Kickboxing background first and had adapted to Muay Thai, obviously Ronnie had adapted much better then Peter. Thanks to Toddy and the better sparring and competition in Europe Ronnie was starting to look like a Muay Thai fighter, his kick, punches and his approach. Although he clearly had no clinch or knee game and hadn’t figured out the need to be solid on his feet as opposed to bouncing around. But this was common in most European Muay Thai guys at the time, it’s what the so-called “Dutch” style came out of. On the otherside of the coin Cunningham (a Canadian I think) who trained out of the States was a pure Western Kickboxer in the mold of the oldskool FC Karate fighters, very side on with loose hands & tip tap kicks. Except for his low kick he was all kickboxer and he never really adapted which is basically the story of American Muay Thai until pretty recently, like the early 2000s. Either way neither was prepared for what the awesome Sagat would bring. Notice how he did the business on Sugar without the use of his super dangerous hands! The judges in the sugarfoot fight………water boarding’s too good for them! :beat

Great interview form Siam Fight Mag (I love that site, you can tell it’s a real labour of love). Interesting the bit about his 1st stadium belt being won from Kitti Sor. Thanikul, another we really need to do a post on but the vid just isn’t out there. Infact I’m off to BKK this weekend for a few months and I might take a trip down memory lane and visit the grand son of Thanikul to see if they have any fight vids left over I can copy.

Here’s Sakad’s highly touted Wai Khu, some say the best there’s ever been. It’s very much like his fight style elegant but very solid & unflamboyant. If you think Buakaw’s Wai Kru is epic check this one out before the above posted Ronnie Green fight:

    [yt]EpFcKxkOsH8[/yt]

Here’s an interesting snippet of him fighting the legendary Nokweed Devi in Lumpinee in 86.

    [yt]M5vGEBT-dGU[/yt]

There’s actually quite a lot on YouTube with him if you search under both his gym names, including that bizarre pensioner rematch a few years ago with Poot Lorlek. This fight may have had something to do with being busted with his son for dealing::think

Check him out training with fellow ATG Orono for the Poot fight, look at his condition and the way he can still work the bag! (around 5 or 6 mins in). He works that bag better than most farang half his age!:admin

Big fella, I will reply, but I'm bushed tonight. In the meantime if you've got the time and patience a few pages back there about 3 threads all about the problems Buakaw was having with Por Pramuk and the ultra conservative Thai fight scene. Yaca and I talk alot about Thai promoters and how it works in Thailand. If you scan back in this thread where I talk about Mr Klao Thanikul you'll see some references to how Songchai got so big.

I fought on Sakad's undercard back in the day, it was a kickboxing rules fight with leg kicks. I remember seeing him at the weigh in, chilling out with some other Thais and eating. I was thinking "This guy has 300 fights???".

Thanks Boran. That video clip of Sagat and Nokweed is good but I wish I could see more of it. His style is very thai "elegant but very solid & unflamboyant" but his power and sixth sense countering ability is unique. I have to say I do want to see more, but I think I have watched everything I can find of him on youtube.

I saw a picture of Sagats mug shot when looking for a picture to post of him (obviously I wasnt going to use his mugshot photo) and I wondered what the story was behind it. It's really too bad that a legend like him would be involved in drug dealings.

anyway, so your going back to Thailand are you boran? well enjoy your time there and good luck.

Jesus RJJ you must be more ancient than I am! I hope you won via brutal 3rd leg kick TKO!

But seriously, I know what you mean about the uber relaxed & nonchalant attitude Thais have before a fight and how mentally scary that can be for a westerner. It blew me away when I first moved out there, thier attitude is the total opposite of how we in the west approach fights. None of the anxious pent up aggression pre fight, just very calm & very jovial, almost comatose. It's just so run of the mill, almost as normal as having breakfast, I've seen them get way more nervous before entering a go go bar or visiting the cinema!

I agree with you about his natural skills, he must of also been super durable and very strong, he always looked so comfortable under extreme fire taking some pretty damaging shots and not flinching (Diesel's knees!) and he always looked such a bull at the weight.

About the dealing don't judge him too harshly. As we've mentioned before life post ring for most boxers brings the super harsh reality of a lack of legitimate and worthwhile opportunities, which often pushes them down avenues they'd rather not take. The reality of poverty soon kicks in and many of these guys find themselves as unwilling but desperate pawns in unhappy situations often being controlled by unscrupulous men that have little respect for their heroic past. That's why so many even the great ones stay in the gym and become mentors to the next generation, it keeps them busy and relevant but financially broken.:-(

Thanks for the good luck wishes Yaca. Flea and I are meeting up for a few days in BKK, we're gonna catch the Jomhod vs Somluck rematch and maybe an Omnoi or Lumpinee card together, shame you can't be there! I've set myself a little side mission to hunt down as much rare footage as I can find as well as see who I bump into to get some interesting photos for the thread. Anyway, I'm off this Saturday and will probably be there for at least a few months so probably won't be posting as regular. I'll be binge posting, with my work I get intense periods of action in the provinces and then alot of downtime in BKK. In BKK internet is fine, but down south and in the neighbouring countries it can be almost non existent.

By the way list any fights MT or Thai western boxing you guys have always wanted to see and I'll see what I can do. Not promising anything, but it'll give me a good starting point.

I'll have a gander when I'm over there; if you care to point me in the right direction Boran :good

That Wilfredo Gomez bout might be an idea though :think

As always, Dieselnoi, Samart, Saensak, all the usual suspects...Borkhorsor (we can but dream!)

And yes; Omnoi/Lumpinee and the big rematch I hope! An absolute festival of violence :D
