Well, define elite.

His skills certainly aren't, his defence certainly is not.

Is elite top 5 p4p?

or top 30?

I dont think he matches up well against true elite fighters like Hopkins and Calzaghe, I rate him as an A grade fighter. But not elite.

hatton was not in his prime when he fought mayweather.

hattons prime was before he won any belt up to the tzsyu fight.

he was kept busy/active and in the gym fighting regualry.

as soon as the 2 fights a year started , his long breaks mean he is now an 8 round fighter and has to struggle through the last 4.

in his prime hatton could have fought 15 rounds at a pace.

 

Fighting 12 rounds at a high pace with a tomato can isn't exactly the same as fighting 12 rounds with Mayweather :good

 

hatton tired v collazo & urango and every person on the uk boxing scene would tell you his stamina has/had become suspect in the last few years compared to the energiser bunny hatton.

 

Ive always been a massive hatton fan (being english), but you got to take your hat off to mayweather he was just to good.

Mayweather proved he is p4p 1 and as said earlier the best fighter since a prime rjj, if not better.

i had mayweather a huge favourite going in , and gave hatton very little chance.

nothing to do with hatton being prime or not i have said over and over and over on esb that mayweather is the best fighter i have seen in my 30 years that i have been watching boxing.

nothing to do with hatton not having the stamina he once had though.

 

So did you just not watch a lot of fighters in those 30 years?

 

i watched a lot of sweet pea and i should add being honest hoping someone would be able to pin him down and chin him.

 

To be fair I don't think Sean is saying that. Mayweather's victory over Hatton is not really at question - moreso whther Hatton was in his prime. Mayweather was too good for Hatton and that may have also been the case a few years ago. However, I think Hatton has started to show signs of slipping latley so perhaps he is not at his best any more.

 

Its not that outlandish really.

I don't agree but some may say that Hatton has not looked quite the same since the Zoo fight or even the Olivera bout.

There were of course many claiming that Hatton was past his prime after the Urango bout citing his diminished stamina and bad reaction to body shots stating that the constant weight fluctations were to blame.

The Castillo fight it could be argued was too short to really gauge whether this was true or not and that Castillo himself was shot to bits and didn't really test either of these theories as a result.

Now let me emphasise i do not believe this is the case...i think Hatton might have lost a little in terms of stamina but this was never really relevant in the Mayweather bout: he was plain outboxed and that would have happened in 2005 or 2007.

Not thee worst post though. Just one i don't agree with.

 

Pavlik vs Klitschko is comparable to Floyd vs Hatton??? How stupid are you??? Floyd won his first title at 130. Hatton at 140.

 

Some people are so ******ed when it comes to the definitions of 'prime' and 'shot'.
When a fighter beats a good fighter 1 year then he's in his prime and then when he loses to a good fighter the next year all of a sudden he's shot!
It's just excuses for people who can't handle the fact that their favourite fighter got beat by a better fighter.
Gotta love ESB logic.

 

This is how I see it. That's not to say Hatton was shot, because he clearly was not. But I think he definitely peaked around the time he fought Ray Oliveira in 2004. He looked really good in that fight, and that was the last time I saw Ricky Hatton fight where I was genuinely impressed and wanted to see him fight again. He looked anywhere from mediocre to complete **** in following bouts from Maussa all the way up until he fought Mayweather. I remember reading a Steve Farhood article about a year ago about this very topic. He felt the same exact way; Hatton peaked circa 2004/05 and was gradually sliding since.
