You know what, I've prob been swayed by Tyson being my era. I'm sure if I'd have grown up in the 60's Ali would have been top for me. I get why people would have Tyson 5-10, but I just can't. Ali's wars with Frazier, the foreman fight should outweigh what Tyson achieved in reality. But Tyson had what I really admire in a fighter: pure aggression, commitment to every punch, fight the bug guys on the inside, and to try And ko every one he fought. A genuine puncher, made all the more incredible by the fact 5'10 Tyson beat guys outweighing him sometimes by 20 pounds, giving away anything up to 6-8 inches in height (the length of a real mans **** manning)
I idolise the guy.

Tyson's record is still lacking though at the end of the day. I have him higher than most on my overall list as well for how special he plainly was. It's just impossible to really get him in a top 5 fairly without relying on the more subjective aspects that you mentioned here.

 

Yeah, it's a fair point you make tffp, but I suppose I am basing some of it on emotion.
What was so impressive about him IMO though was the ferocity that he took the division with and the age he was at.
Obviously on paper there are better, but watching Tyson was like watching a man fighting with the primeval instincts we all posses but surpress. Impressive guy IMO and even if he is just a top ten guy it's still testament to his achievements. It's just for me he's number one!

He faced more top level punchers than any champ in history IMO :good

Question for you Flea... without Foreman's comeback, where would you rank him?

Ali, Holmes, Louis, Lewis, Foreman, Holyfield, Liston, Tyson, Marciano, Charles.

Charles deserving of place in the list. Though a light heavy was first guy to beat Louis in 14 years, was 2-2 with Walcott (won first two and robbed in last apparently), had two classics with Marciano, beat Joey Maxim three times and KO'd Archie Moore twice.

 

Still top ten, but not consistently battlig Holmes for 4th, which he does in my head all the time

Probably in the 7,8 or 9 spot he arguably would still have a bit more than Marciano and Frazier (considering his H2H win against him, I think Fraziers big win over Ali might still place him over George, but I'd be easy either way) as well as Charles, Walcott, Liston and Patterson IMO. Still has Frazier (first fight) Norton, Lyle and Chuvalo. As well as facing the greatest HE of all time. If he'd never come back his loss to Young would be easily dismissed as 'past his prime'.

 

Lewis should be in the top 3, in fact he should never be out of anyone's top 4 of all time.

He has a valid case for top ten alltime.

In a post-war top ten (an actual post war top ten would be even more interesting WHERE WOULD LOUIS BE?!?) he's an absolute lock for the top ten.

If you think otherwise in telling you now you are an utter Mong. If you feel you aren't and I'm being harsh, name me a top ten from post-'45 without Tyson in it?
