Hey everybody, I've decided that I'll continue the league until the end of the year, but I'll need someone else to make the threads during July when I'll be gone for most of the month (either that or I'll just make one predictions thread with all the fights from the first 3 weeks of July).

I've changed one thing about the league without having a vote (I went back to the old system with a draw pick instead of a combined SD/draw pick) and I won't be changing anything else for the rest of the year unless people demand something. If you feel strongly about having a SD/draw pick option, speak up and maybe I'll change it, but I feel that the old system worked well and the SD/draw pick was unfair in some ways.

A third of the year is over and northend is leading the league by an amazing margin. This is a great week and we should have a lot of different TKO/UD picks, maybe even some upset picks on the HBO card.

• correct winner = 15
• correct winner + correct decision pick = 25
• correct winner + correct stoppage pick = 30
Decision picks:
• correct wide or close decision pick* = 30
Stoppage picks**:
• 3 rounds or less off correct stoppage round = 35
• 1 round off correct stoppage round = 40
• correct stoppage round = 45
Draw = 50 points

* a wide unanimous decision: a decision where all three judges score the fight for one fighter and two or more of the judges' scores are four points or more apart e.g. 116-112, 115-111, 116-111, etc.
* a close unanimous decision: a decision where all three judges score the fight for one fighter and two or more of the judges' scores are three points or less apart e.g. 115-112, 116-113, 114-112, etc. A split decision or a majority decision is scored as a close unanimous decision.

** a disqualification or retirement will count as a stoppage win.

Blue riband events - really big fights like Pavlik v. Taylor, Calzaghe v. Hopkins, etc. - will count for twice the points as usual big fights. Scores for those blue riband events get multiplied by two.

Anyone can join the league at any time, even late. In order to give late starters a chance to compete fairly, they will start in the middle of the pack, at the median position, out of those who have participated every week.

If for some reason you miss a week and you are in the top 25 in the league, you will be allocated the median score for that week. Everyone has 3 lives (will be "saved" up to three times). This, to ensure top pickers are not demotivated by their failure to pick one week.

A clean sweep system will be applied for weeks with 5 fights or more. The clean sweep bonus will be 20 points.

If, by common consensus, a clear robbery might have occured, a review panel made up of brooklyn1550, kg0208, sean, McGrain and sues2nd will decide whether the result should be overruled for the purposes of our league. Unless they all agree unanimously that it was a robbery, we go by official results.

Good luck! :good

All those who have two stars in front of their names: If you are in the top 25 and miss another week, your score will be increased only once more only, with the mean score that week. If you are outside the top 25 and miss another week, you will be struck off the list of competitors. You will not be allowed to rejoin.

90% of the time new people join this league, they end up leaving it the next week. Plus, it's May already, so everyone who wanted to be a part of it is a part of it. I'll probably make an exception to this if you message me and ask to join, but after this week, when new posters give their picks I'll just ignore them.. it's almost always a waste of time.

Good stuff, huki! Thanks for the hard work so far and for taking this on!

Just one thing, though...

...I never heard of these fighters, ever.

They are not highly ranked and they're not fighting for any title; in the spirit of the whole "BIG FIGHT" league, these fights do not qualify as BIG FIGHTS. Certainly, you haven't had a 50% majority voting for these fights to be included...

http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64684

Gamboa v. Jimenez is strictly speaking not a big fight either, but people seem to get excited about it anyway, so I can see why you might want to include it...

Anyway, you are running the league now because you are putting all the work in, so you decide everything you want to change or do, as I gave you permission, with my thanks for your contribution...

...but, as for me, I think it's time to pull out of the contest; no point in me just guessing the results of fights where I haven't even heard of the fighters involved.

Consider me out!

Did I miss a week or something?:huh

I've only gotten the Witter fight wrong lately and everyone did. Last time I was #4 or 5.

I don't understand what you mean by "you didn't have a 50% majority voting for these fights to be included". Every fight got over 50% of the votes for "yes" other than the Angulo one, which got exactly 50%. The definition of a "big fight" in this league is any fight that people vote is big enough to be in the league. You have never heard of these fighters, but they've been on Shobox/ESPN multiple times and they'll be featured in important, competitive fights on an HBO tripleheader that will get them ranked high in their divisions.

Anyways, I'm not going to waste time defending every decision. This league is for fun, it's not a scientific experiment to find out who is the most accurate picker of huge fights. If you want to find out more about these fighters and watch them, there are a lot of places on the internet where you could do that and make an educated guess about how the fights would go. If you want to somehow protest the league by leaving, then that's fine too. I think you're taking it way too seriously instead of just having some fun predicting fights on a boxing forum, but hey, do whatever you want. :D

The last time I counted the scores was all the way back before the night of the Cotto fight.

You got the Cintron/Woods fights wrong, your Dawson pick was by TKO, and your Calzaghe by TKO pick only gave you 30 points (it was a blue riband event that gave many people 50-60 who chose Calzaghe wide/close UD). That brought you down quite a bit since a lot of people chose Margarito by TKO in the middle rounds and Calzaghe/Dawson by UD.

Damn, you think you're doing worse than usual? I'm only 5 points above PacDBest, mostly because of the JMM-Pac fight, but it's still embarassing as hell.

I voted no for every fight but Mijares-Munoz.

Thought the point of this league was for BIG fights only. Not just any fight involving a known fighter.

I suggested we require that fights had a 50% MAJORITY voting for them to be run over those voting for them not to be run, to be run, to ensure that we only pick BIG fights. You, however, have decided to do away with that suggestion. Your right.

The only fights that had a 50% majority voting for them to be run were the Gamboa fight and the Mijares fight. Anyway, the Gamboa fight shouldn't even have been included in the poll because it's not a big fight anyway you look at it.

The point of the BIG FIGHT league was that it only ran BIG FIGHTS. You've decided to change it to a "BIG FIGHT and some other fights that I want to run" league, and that's fine too, if that's what you want and if everyone else is fine with that, although, to be honest, if you aren't going to run just big fights, you might as well scrap it and go with lbarrow's excellent league that runs plenty of big and non-big but interesting fights. My opionion, anyway.

Not sure why you go on about that scientific experiement v. fun picking duality...but anyway...your league now...

I leave because I want to, because I don't see the point in me box-rec-ing the fights to come up with an answer. If I wanted to do that, I'd have joined lbarrow's league and wouldn't have bothered with starting this one. Anyway, enough about me and what I think. Your league. Thanks for what you've done and good luck!:good

Should I not let people vote on fights like the ones on HBO this week and simply decide by myself if fights are big enough, only choosing ones that are truly big fights (championship fights against top level opponents)? There would only be a few fights a month that way, only one this month in Witter-Bradley.

I'm just wondering.. did you think Adamek-Bell was big enough for the league? Howabout Witter-Bradley? Would you think something like Pascal-Zuniga or Kessler-Sartison belongs in this league?

Maybe we could have one final vote on this and see what people want. It's hard to please everyone, but I understand what you and Decebal are saying and although running this league is getting annoying, a final vote on exactly how fights should be chosen is very reasonable and would help me out.

I agree with you, but Decebal has a point too. It's just that he's extremely passionate about this league, yet he left and chose to let me run it completely for some strange reason. :D

Decebal, it's extreme comparing this league to lbarrow's. These are HBO fights with fighters that have been on national TV multiple times. And the main thing is: people wanted to have these fights included. I now see what you mean by the "50% majority" thing, it wasn't clear to me before. Anyways, maybe we'll have one final vote like I explained before. Honestly, I don't care that much and I'd rather waste time talking about boxing than arguing about the league. This league has been a hassle to run, but I'll continue to run it since it's already been 4 months and people are committed to it.
