Amatuer titles galore, Numerous profressional titles and still if you ask Wayne Alexander he would feel he underachieved in career that spanned over 15 years.

''Alexander The Great'' would emerge from Croydon ABC and later make the transition over to the Lynn ABC in Camberwell. He would have fine amatuer career winning the National Junior title at 67kg and progressing onto winning the ABA Light Middleweight title in 1994.

The Croydon banger would thrill crowds in the unpaid ranks with his gunslinging style. Stopping numerous foes across the country and that eventually lead him to representing his country at the Liverpool Multi Nations in 93 and 94. He'd also box against Denmark and Scotland in 94 and 95 respectively.

He would share what many feel is one of the greatest unpaid battle's to ever grace this country when he squared of against fellow South Londoner Richard ''The Secret'' Williams in the London ABA Final. This fight would show the traits that would follow Wayne into the profressional game.

Alexander was a brutal puncher but could also be hurt, that vunrelable side would lead him to become one of the most entertaining fighters of the his era in the professional ranks. His debut would come in 1995 shortly after the loss to Williams. He would face off against Andrew Jervis in Novemember of 1995, He would beat Jervis inside 3 one sided rounds.

He would then embark on a reign of terror through the Light Middleweight division stopping 9 of his first 10 opponents before facing off against the enigma that was Ojay Abrahams for the Vacant Southern Area title. Alexander wouldn't have to long to display his punch power as Abrahams would get himself disqualified not for the last time in his career for kneeing Alexander.

They would rematch for the same title just 4 months later, The vunreable side of Alexander would be shown in a small hall classic, but he'd also show his powers of recovery as he would go on to stop the Watford man inside 3 action packed rounds.

He wouldn't have to wait to long for his chance to claim his second career title when he faced off against then undefeated power puncher Paul Samuels for the Vacant British Light Middleweight title in Dagenham.

The fight would be one of the finest domestic battles Sky would show that decade. A back and forth brawl in which both men traded heavy artillery but it would be ''Alexander The Great'' who would prevail with him sending the defenceless Samuels through the ropes and captured the Londsdale title.

As with Wayne's style he'd take a out of the blue call to fight Harry Simon for the WBO Light Middleweight Title in Widnes. Alexander would receive the offer at just 24 hours notice to face Simon who had captured the title on a contrversial night against Ronald ''Winky'' Wright. Simon was a extremely strong and skilled champion. It would be a massive ask of Alexander.

''I can take out any light middleweight in the world including Harry Simon'' and that so nearly was the case as he wobbled the Namibian in the early rounds but after a strong opening would succumb to the strength and precise body punching from the champion and would be stopped on his feet in the 5th by Paul Thomas.

Many felt that the showing would only be the start for Alexander. That he would make his way back to world level in due course. He'd bounce back with two wins, One against Joe Townsley in a defence of his British title in which he stopped the Scotsman in brutal fashion.

Alexander would then face the Italian Pizzamiglio for the Vacant EBU Light Middleweight Title at the York Hall. Alexander would dispatch his Italian foe inside 3 rounds and show his world class punch power and credentials.

It was clear to see that Wayne was a world class fighter, but he was in a extremely tough division and chances were hard to come by and with time his career would stagnate, ring activity would wane with injuries such as shingles taking a effect as well as a freak running accident that broke his ankle.

He would be forced into a keep busy fight against the solid Delroy Mellis from Carshalton but what was meant to be a routine assignment would turn out to be anything but as he would be stopped by Mellis in the 8th round.

The comeback wouldn't be routine neither, Against wiley veteran Howard Clarke at Middleweight. Alexander would be dropped in the opening round only to bounce back and stop the Midlander in the next round. Next up would be a shot at the lowly regarded WBU title, Alexander would face off against another big punching Brit in Takaloo at the York Hall. The era domestically was stacked with fantastic talent and for one of the very few times the talent would meet up and settle who was the better man.

One of the most sickening knockouts of any era took Alexander to the title and Alexander hoped this would catapult him to another world title shot. Sadly with more injuries he'd end up in the obsecurity of big bill undercards his dedication waned more and more, he'd exact revenge on Mellis in a non title fight but would sadly never get back to where he and many felt he belonged and in the December of 2006 he would be stopped inside one round against the unknown Serge Vigne. Alexander would hang his gloves up and is now showing the tricks of the trade to fighters at the Croydon Boxing Academy as well as being a dotting father to his two daughters.

Alexander may well of been one of the greatest power punchers this country ever produced, sadly he only graced the world stage just the once when it really should of been more times as his power would of trouble anyone in the world at 154lbs. A career of if's and buts, but when it's all said and done Alexander goes down as one of the finest fighters of his era domestically and enters the British Boxing Hall of Fame :good.

Great idea for a thread Mand been thinking about doing something like this myself. There are plenty of examples of "domestic" greats people who were class domestic fighters but couldnt cut it at that top level.

Other recent examples are Danny Williams and Jamie Moore. There are absolutely loads though throughout the years.
